LarsenNET: Can someone test a 360 controller for the 1998 version? I don't have one with me. Thanks
I just tried the first X-Wing game and it worked just fine with the gamepad (wired). Haven't actually tried to play it properly yet. Calibrating the stick is a bit annoying as moving to each "corner" of the sticks extremities is hit and miss and results in innaccurate movement.

Basically, this is exactly the same as the versions which were available on torrents with DOSBox. Even the manuals and reference cards are the same crappy scans that came with my dodgy torrent copy (I do own the oringinals on CD).

EDITED: Just tried the newer version of X-Wing and it works with the 360 gampepad without having to calibrate. I think my wired gamepad (less than 6 months old, bought for playing X-Wing/TIE-Fighter with DOSBox) needs the option to set a deadzone, since anytime I try to accurately shoot something the crosshairs get crazily jumpy. I know someone made an edited version of DOSBox to allow setting of deadzones, but mine had to be set so high that it made pinpoint targeting very difficult. I wish there was a decent solution.

thanks gog
My Logitech gamepad works fine
I hope that the "Blunt Stick" mission trick will still work, because I could never beat all those advanced enemies otherwise XD

Veloxi: The DOS versions have more simpler graphics, but have an amazing interactive music system that reacts to what's happening in the mission. [..]
+1 for the possible better graphic and resolution of this version (very primitive on dos)
-2 for the possible missing option to enable the original dynamic midi music!!

I think I'll get this one first. :)
Tested both versions, uh yeah, DEFINITELY prefer the 98 Windows version over the original DOS. It's like night and day between the two graphically, though I found the DOS version's music sounded like SNES music which was interesting to me.
YES! Outside of Scorched Earth, this and TIE Fighter were the first PC games I ever really played, and I honestly never much liked any other space sims afterwards. Thank you GOG!
I wonder if any of the Windows versions have some kind of hardware mode. Does Glide emulator work with any of them?

The windows versions should use hardware mode Direct3D

Kondorr: Is the XBOX controller supported?

IronArcturus: I would like to know if Xbox 360 controllers work as well.
I confirm that it does work, BUT there is one big epic BUT... all you can do with it, is stear, spin, and shoot... all shield controls, fire configurations and speed is to be adjusted via keyboard. So it is not optimal, but ok.

Does anyone know how to set the remaining buttons, like the D-Pad for this game?
Just bought XWing SE.

I have an xbox 360 wired controller- The left Thumbstick works fine for pitch and yaw, but the Right Thumbstick does not work and I cant roll the XWing to the left or right.

Any suggestions?

For Dosbox press Ctrl-F1.
JoyToKey (free) or Xpadder (payware), there are probably more out there.
The DOS version supports only 2 joystick axis, don't know about the Windows version though.

01kipper: When can we expect a Mac/Boxer version? :'(...
Mac version please!
Okay,

I bought both copies of X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

Haven't downloaded them yet. Haven't played them yet.

But just the promise that I will soon be able to...

GOG.com, this is a pièce de résistance if there ever was one.

Just outstanding!
