So I just want to know something.
How many Goggers are members of the Scouting Movement? Am I the only one?
I'm currently an Explorer Scout in Leader training here in Britain, off to camp on Monday, even. Been in Scouts since 2002, and I don't think I'm ready to leave yet.
I'm an American Eagle Scout, troop 463. Admittedly, I haven't done much with the troop since I left to go to college, but that could change...
American Life Scout Troop 142. I'll hopefully be getting my Eagle Scout before the end of the year; just have to get some camping nights and do the project!
Well it's good to see I'm not THAT alone! A virtual left-handed handshake for you both :D (yes, I'm very nerdy in my Scoutery)

I was an American Star Scout, troop 224, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
And then I got the pc bug. ;)

Do they call it a movement now?
No.

michaelleung: No.

Were you scared of Scout Master Herbert?

Yes, since its governed by separate organisations in different parts of the world. In the UK, we have the Scout Association. Everyone shares the same Chief Scout, though. Which at the moment is Bear Grylls (no joke!).

So when you guys go out scouting, do you camp only in places that are within walking distance of a hotel and have full cell phone coverage? You know, the Bear Grylls method of "roughing it".

hahaha, well, just by coincidence where I'm going on Monday is near a hotel, but there's no mobile phone coverage there at all.
And the Hotel is way too snooty for us to pay for!
I'm a scout too, but to be honest I haven't been actively involved since before cellphones were common.

Last time I went camping with the scouts, nobody owned cell phones! We'd go camping in the sticks of Virginia. Usually we'd setup camp within a city block of the vehicles. Setup tents and go about the planned activities. Occassionally we'd do an orienteering themed trip where we hike deep into woulds, build an improvised shelter, and stay there a couple nights. Fun times.
While I've never heard of anyone retreating to a hotel, I would not describe a simple camping trip as "roughing it". The scout motto is "be prepared" after all.
Who is Bear Grylls? Does he sleep in a camper and light his fires with kerosene?

Bear Grylls is the host of "Man vs. Wild", a show that is supposed to be about showing people how to survive in the unlikely event that you get lost in the wilderness by getting himself lost in the wilderness. A lot of people compare it to the show "Survivorman". However, unlike Survivorman's Les Stroud, Bear Grylls was caught "surviving" with a full camera crew, EMTs, a cell/satellite phone and a nightly hotel stay.

Bivouacs are the shit! I've stayed in one plenty of times and it has always been the best nights sleep I have ever had!
Last October we slept purely outside, we found a grove just outside the boundaries of the campsite and setup there. We'll be going out there again this week, I hope. Maybe this time I'll snag the hammock.
