I wonder if there's a decent, persistent 4X on-line game that doesn't require monetary commitment in order to stand a chance, where one could play either aggressive or defensive and that allows for strategic alliances with friends (e.g. not being placed randomly with no chance of interaction) AND that has some GoG members playing (or even better...) consider starting.

I know that I'm asking for much here, maybe even too much, but I'd gladly take suggestions.

Been there, done that. Most unfortunately not many GoG members seem to play the game (at least now) and cooperation can become quite troublesome depending on location.

It isnt free but Armada 2526 has MP doesnt it and it seems to go on sale pretty often.
