Razzoul: who is Michael Cera and Zac Effron? By the way, this is a serious question........

Micheal Cera is a (Canadian?) actor who was in Superbad and Zac Effron is the...'actor'....who plays the main male role in High School Musical. i only know of the latter because of a friend who loves Disney more than I love GOG.

Right, he was in Arrested Development! Also, lets add Shia LaBeouf to the list.

Chihaya: people worship all the most worthless/dumb people..

Was there a point in history where that wasn't true? People have spent millennia worshipping beings that don't even exist. Comparatively celebrity culture is an improvement.

i think humanity is better off worshipping Thor, but that's only my opinion.

Than Bieber? Certainly. I think almost anything is better than that. Including going insane and worshipping magical cloud fairies.

I do that when I eat the wrong shrooms...also, sometimes in KoL.

Pretty boys with perfect facial proportions who could be mistaken for girls from afar because they're so effeminate.

Look at this trend, it's gradually settling into the rest of the world.

Well, that is pretty correct...
*reminisces the heyday of people like Harrison Ford and Connery*
Wherever your beliefs concerning religion stands, the mythical/religious idols and other great men of legends were emblematic figures who stood for good values that people were to strive for. This was the glue that held civilizations together. It's what, for example, allowed the Christians to survive over the ruins of the Roman empire, and the Muslims to build a civilization and reclaim the lost knowledge of the Romans and the Greeks. At the root of all that were the Gods and the men of legend and their commandments that men were to follow and obey so as to renounce their instinct for the greater good of humanity.
Today's idols are only worshipped for their looks or stupidity, instead of their courage and their great deeds and values. People only care for their hedonism and let their instincts run amok, and this is the sad result. A world where only the shallowest of values are recognized that every day is more reminiscent of the decadent Roman empire.

NK is climbing rapidly. This has to be the first time I've cheered on NK.

Chihaya: snip

That's a pretty idealised perspective. You're not really taking into account how much these perceptions of organised religion and hero figures differed from the truth.

How is truth any relevant? Whether or not these Gods or figures actually existed or not had no meaning. All that matters is their consequences on people's behaviors and values.
Under Christianity:
Love your neighbor, be compassionate, be pious, be faithful in marriage, don't worship wordly goods. In essence, strive to be a good human being.
Today:
Get good looks, make money, don't be a nerd, worship the flavor of the week, dismiss those who have good values and intelligence as pathetic, do whatever you feel like doing because it feels good and to hell with the consequences.

Depends if you're gay or not, I suppose. Or were disobedient as a kid. Or don't fancy the idea of being a slave. Or... well yeah, you get the idea.
I'm not trying to say that celebrity culture is some kind of vast improvement. Especially seeing as I loathe it. But at least it's grounded in reality. That's a start.

That's what they said about Big Brother, and look what happened there.

I carefully avoided the entirety of that. Not watching much TV certainly helps in that regard.
