Hello all, I hope the GOG team don't mind me posting this, I am going to South Korea, in particular the city of Seoul for three weeks (25th of this month until the 17th). Has anyone been there before or lives there and can recommend interesting events and activities, good deals (markets and the like) or pretty cool locations that I should visit or take part in?
Never been there myself, but I've got a friend from South Korea that I could ask.

If you could, that would be useful.

I've spent a good deal of time in Seoul. Its probably my favorite city in the world. To be honest, there isn't very much in the way of tourist attractions. The culture is so rich though, and the food is delicious. You should go to Seoul Tower, especially at night. The view is pretty cool. Cheon'gae'cheong is pretty cool too (again, at night). I would recommend eating in Myeongdong, though there are good restaurants in a lot of places. Technomart might be interesting if you like electronic gadgets. If you're looking for a market, go to Dongdaemun or Namdaemun. Really, Seoul isn't a tourist city. If you want to see the true beauty of the culture, go out to eat and drink with Koreans. Go to a Korean national soccer team game if you can. If you're looking for traditional souvenirs and crafts, go to Insadong.
Oh, and make sure to get a subway card right away. The subway in Seoul is great. And remember to be respectful, especially to older people. If you can, learn to read hangeul. Most restaurants don't have picture menus, so you'll need to know some basic foods.
If you have any other questions be free to ask. Have fun!

Any guidebook will probably tell you the basics. I only went for a few days but I rather liked seoul.
I found this website pretty useful. http://www.lifeinkorea.com
Bascially, seoul seems to break down into:
Big market areas. Open late. Lots of brands, dept stores, bargains and markets, depending on the area.

i liked the more quiet street and getting a traditional korean tea in a tea house. I think it was this one: http://www.lifeinkorea.com/Travel2/seoul/9
5 Major palaces, and at least the two I went to rocked. A bit like the forbidden city in Beijing. Some are only open on limited days or for tours. Others any time.
Biggest: http://www.lifeinkorea.com/travel2/seoul/66/ try to catch the changing of the guard.
Lots of cheap and pretty darn spicy food. Lots of barbecue restaurants, and dozens of street food stalls outside all the stations all night.
A nice night time walk along the small man-made river with lights.

Lots of parks along the huge han river in the middle
, or watching the sunset from the bank.

Rather liked this small traditional village where i dressed up as a king. Shh.

A chance for me to get Dunkin Donuts as tokyo only has Krispy Kreme. :-(
wish i'd had more time to look around though. I hear that, at least in summer, it's better to head out of seoul into the hills, which are cooler and more beautiful.
