Steam is branching out a bit, and have started to selling more software then games:

http://store.steampowered.com/software

So far they are offering

GameMaker: Studio
3D-Coat
ArtRage Studio Pro
3DMark Vantage
3DMark 11
CameraBag 2

If you get Workshop integration I can see how this can work. Now we need Adobe on there and 90% Steam sales.
Oh my God they insert achievements here :l

hah - I didn't notice that. "100 Compile Errors" - I might achieve that one.
That's very clever of them.
They open more and more to the modding scene with adding steam workshop to many games and they provide the tools people can use to make those mods.
And gaming videos.
3D-Coat looks very interesting, but I've never heard of it... can anyone recommend it over 3ds Max?

don't know much about it sorry, except that it apparently is voxel based, which makes it different to 3ds max.
i can't see GOG following suit. maybe they will, but IMHO they are going to stick to games.

who knows though, if they survive for many years, they might one day expand their company as steam is expanding. companies do strange things to mix it up and keep it real. lol.
Fuck! I just bought the professional version from the developer's page for 100€ last Saturday! On Steam it's 70€ stupid assholes! Thanks for not mentioning the Steam version anywhere on your homepage, YoYo Games! Aaaargh!

Edit: Oh yeah, and since it's Steam it's probably only $70 for non-European users there while I paid $120. Great! I'm so pissed right now, especially since the copy protection of the version from YoYo Games is complete bullshit and is often causing a lot of trouble.

Yes, we definitely need old software!

T602, M206, Norton Comander and all that stuff!

Oh, yea! Norton Antivirus 2003 for the win!
You're saying I can buy 3D Mark through Steam rather than download the basic version for free to benchmark my system?

Take my money!

I can see that working especially with the 3DMark benchmark utilities. But then those benchmark programs keep online charts of most powerful PCs already now, so the e-peen measurements are already possible even without Steam.

Well, the free versions have limited functionality, like not being able to change the resolution or other settings for the benchmarking. But they still get the main point done, ie. measuring the gaming performance of your system.

I actually did get recently a 7% improvement in 3DMark11 results by updating the NVidia GeForce drivers to the newest versions, yay! So the e-penis enlargement ads were not lying after all! I'll have to show this to my gf, most impressive.

Not going to lie, Game Maker Studio on Steam is actually really cool. The fact that they let you upload your games directly to Steam Workshop gives people trying to get free games on Steam through Greenlight a nice avenue onto Steam, granted they use some form of Game Maker.

Here's hoping to see more like that. :)

Slim chances, but maybe you may ask them for a steam key?
