Just because a game is old they think its abandonware and they should be given it free.
"selling abandonware" hehe :)

Remarkable. In those days I was just a little kid and obviously wouldn't buy games myself but my brother bought a few major titles right after release (like Pacific Strike, Panzer General, Rise 2 and Command & Conquer) - and oddly enough the highest prices he paid were 100 DM (the old German currency, worth roughly 0.5 USD back then). I always thought that US prices were lower than European ones back then.
Strijkbout: If System Shock gets streamlined controls it becomes a run'n'gun shooter instead of making a tactical approach to every situation. Now that's an interesting theory on clunky controls. I've mostly played it with the mouse look patch applied but frankly I didn't see the game getting any shallower this way. It just felt better. :P
But I can somewhat understand your concern because I hate everyone who plays Doom with mouse look. Admittedly I don't think that Doom is any more "tactical" when playing it with keyboard controls but mouse look still feels just wrong in this game.

I'm wondering whether Amiga games were generally more expensive than PC titles. Admittedly most our Amiga games were pirated copies (let's face it: the vast majority of people *solely* owned pirated games for the Amiga and the system owed some of its success to this :P) and our original ones were from low budget re-releases... <.<
Dang, awesome. Love the game. Sadly I only have the PC version (bundled on one disc with Populous 2) which did not get the expansion. :/

Actually from what I've seen, many people have learned how "abandonware" isn't actually a legal state and thus is technically equivalent to piracy. But maybe you visit sites I don't.

I for one totally back the idea of this coming to GOG. And I would like the SSP patches included, even if they have to be disabled by default and enabled by the user in the menus. The hi-res patch is lovely, and personally I find mouselook to be a huge improvement (except in the cyberspace portions, which really need keyboard control).
I have lost count of the number of times I've bought this game. I still have 3 CD copies, including at least one unopened one as an emergency backup. Having a GOG edition, especially one with all the candy, would be heaven-sent.

I'd really like to see System Shock 1 here, but I'll believe it when it's more or less confirmed (or rather, released on GOG) :)
I'm also waiting for Wizardry 1 through 5! (when and if)

And I think occasionally people still post a question concerning GOG's legal status on the forums right here before making a purchase.

Some people still don't understand that as you pointed out, but I think if when posting on these forums they aren't throwing accusations around and are simply asking a question about abandonware, we should try to answer graciously and without insult.

A lot of ire has been directed at us via the "you are selling abandonware!" argument because of the mistaken impression that we somehow make all of the abandonware sites take down the games they were offering for download. Frankly speaking, we don't have the time or the inclination to go around sending C&D letters to those sites because, really, it kind of makes you look like a git and most of the honorable abandonware sites take the games down of their own accord. The reason? Because they are actively trying to preserve video game history in their own way since no one else is doing it, the legality of doing so notwithstanding (let's not discuss that as I am not a lawyer :P )
