In an unusual move, I'm going to talk about why I don't want The Witcher. I'm a big fan of RPGs generally, especially games that leave the player with genuinely open-ended options about how to resolve many situations (a la Fallout). However, based on what little I know about The Witcher (which consists of having watched the trailer and maybe half-read some reviews when it came out), it struck me as a rather juvenile effort at 'maturity' - invoking nudity and racial themes as an attempt to act 'dark' and 'edgy', rather than because it actually had anything to say. "Oooh, people are being racist towards fantasy races, that's a new one!" On that basis I pretty much dismissed the game and have never taken a second look - plenty of other games I could be playing, right?

But, I'm always open having my mind changed. So if you think that I've terribly misjudged the game based on a superficial first impression (which I'll admit is possible), and you want to PROVE ME WRONG, then by all means gift me the game - I'll play it, and tell you what I think.

It's actually inspired by a book that tackled this issues within a fantasy world very naturally and believably, without doing anything to sound dark or edgy. The Witcher tried to follow up on that, and while it succeeded at some levels, it failed at others. Second part does pretty much everything way better. It's still not perfect, but it's much better.

I ... Don't think you'd like it. The game is not really much open-ended, you get a pre-defined character that you shape.

Fair enough then. That's not a deal-breaker for me, but better that the game go to someone who's actually enthusiastic about it. Thanks for the feedback, maybe I'll check out part 2.

SimonG: While I'm not a great fan of The Witcher *cough*, I must admit that it is a game worth playing. Especially as it had some impact on the RPGs coming after it.

So you lazy asses, get onto this thread and try to get that free copy!
It's had a lot of impact, actually. It's not for everyone, but I personally consider it a classic. Not many games have the nuance in writing, the approach to dynamic plots, or the uncompromising adult content.
Well, I've heard and seen a lot about The Witcher games, but never got around to getting them let alone playing them. So many games and so little time!

The Witcher 2 trailers are amazing and the gameplay vids just as good. I always try to start with the first game in a series because I don't ever want to miss anything story wise by jumping ahead. Maybe I can finally start the series with Witcher 1.
bumpy bump
I liked games such as Heroes of Might & Magic or Westwood's Lands of Lore and Eye of the Beholder games but I couldn't play them much. My friends used to play pen and paper RPGs and I liked observing their enthusiasm while they are playing. I guess what I like to see when I play a RPG is to have this kind of enthusiasm, to truly belong a world where you role play. I don't dislike anything particular in RPGs, but I guess there is something in RPGs that do not let me dive into their worlds and be a part of it.

Accatone: RPGs have never been my type of games so I always wait the one that would change my mind. Maybe Witcher IS the game, who knows!

Fenixp: What do you dislike about RPGs and what do you like about the concept?
