Navagon: You and a whole hell of a lot of other people it seems. The black edition is quite a significant improvement on the original. But it's difficult to recommend it given the lack of people to play against.
It's unfortunate, really. Damn halo effect. :(

killert, if I recall correctly, people does still play online in 2004 version. I just usually play it in LAN mode but I do play it with my buddies out of state for lulz.

I guess that's why I loved LAN play so much, my friends and I were always at about the same skill level.
Let me throw in another vote for UT2004. It's a fantastic game, online or offline. Best of all is on a private server with a bunch of people you know, and using TeamSpeak or something similar to talk to each other (or yell at each other) at the same time.

Also, the sheer volume of free extra user-made content available for UT2004 means that you won't be buying a game, you'll be buying 50 games, with tons of variations.
UT2004, though it's not a travesty to opt for UT by any means.
