GOG loves D&D

The Best of The Best. Unrivaled Champions of the genre. Nine of the Greatest. The Supreme Achievement of isometric era. Matchless. Perfect. 11 out of 10. Yes, you've guessed it--we're talking about D&D RPGs. From now until Friday, September 21 at AM 9:59 GMT [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/hasbro_stacking_promo/]you can buy fantastic Hasbro RPGs from the world of Dungeons and Dragons up to 65% off! If by some terrible twist of fate you didn't have the chance to add all of those Diamonds to your collection, now is a chance to correct this terrible injustice. Let's take a peek into the treasury, shall we?

In the center of our D&D chamber we've got the iconic Baldur’s Gate: The Original Saga and Baldur’s Gate II: Complete that collectively received over 10 “Best game of the year” awards from publications such as PC Gamer, Eurogamer, Computer Games Magazine and IGN. And in the cold, ice-filled corner there's the Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 series that brought the D&D license to a more combat-oriented RPG gaming. The strange shimmering light comes from the inter-dimensional portal where Planescape: Torment resides. Winner of multiple RPG and Game of the Year awards in 1999, it is widely considered as one of the best storytelling RPGs in gaming history.
The treasure chamber wouldn't be complete without Neverwinter Nights--a game with a great single player campaign that offers even greater multiplayer experience and modding capabilities. This game is literally one you could play the rest of your life, if you were determined to get through every single user-created campaign or keep attending a multi-player server. And don't forget about the somewhat underrated gems in the collection! Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard is a fascinating blend of RPG and RTS. Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone is an action RPG with some interesting tactical elements to go along with the usual hack and slash of the genre. Finally, Temple of Elemental Evil, one of the tougher tactical RPGs ever--so hard that it balances on the fine edge of fairness.

A short news post like this is not nearly enough to give justice to each single D&D Diamond available in this promo. And because GOG staff loves D&D so much we are going to tell you about our personal experiences with those games throughout the week, starting tomorrow. But enough talk! Let the D20s roll! Visit the promo page to complete your collection of Diamonds of D&D!
So was this promo timed to coincide with the Project Eternity kickstarter? It would make sense if so.
*sigh* Be right back, gotta update my backlog of games. Again.
Grabbed IW1+2 BG1+2 to complete my collection, although I own them already multiple times on pristine condition box sets

anjohl: ABOUT TIME you guys twisted hasbros arm! Did it take the threat of massage by gelatinous cube?
I think that GOG is rather just cashing in on the games as long as they are scarce among other shops. Several of the games have just reappeared on GamersGate, with Wizards of the Coast (not Hasbro) listed as publisher. Assuming that that's not an exclusive deal, it seems that the general availability of the games might increase again.

That's just speculation though. Also, in case anybody reads criticism into my lines, I don't see anything wrong with it either.

geoguy2011: Or in the case of Baldur's Gate you could buy the enhanced edition from Beamdog available on September 18th. Yea, it costs more but you get more content. In all likelihood GOG has this D&D sale on precisely because it is coming out.

adamzs: I'm definitely with with the "get NWN2 on GOG in this instant!" crowd. That game was pretty good, but what I was really impressed with was its first expansion Mask of the Betrayer. They've done a really interesting and unique portrayal of Rashemen there.

And once again: buy Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, and Planescape: Torment. Do it.

adamzs: Sure, I'm all for BG:EE. Can't wait for the release - four more days, fingers crossed.

Still, if someone is new to the BG games at least getting BG2 now would be a good idea in my opinion, seeing as BG2:EE probably won't be out for another year or so, and that's just way too long a time to wait for playing such an outstanding game.

Edit: Scratch that, BG:EE release date is now November 30th. That's a bummer.
Since BG:EE is delayed and I haven't pre-ordered it yet, now I know where to spend my money instead this month. Question, is PLANESCAPE: TORMENT really that good?

Yes! If you are looking for a game with good writing, atmosphere and music you just can't get better ;) One of my favourite games ever!
Weird, I deselect the ones I don't want = $29.94
Reselect The Temple of Elemental Evil = $28.97

LOL

Writing, story and setting are among the best I've ever encountered in 30 years of gaming. The combat has its flaws (ranged combat isn't even implemented except by NPC), but no one ever plays, or should play, this game for the combat.
Instant buy for me. Thanks GOG. I've been waiting for this for ages..
Already own PST and BG1+2, so I'm thinking of getting NWN (Icewind Dale's and TToE are a bit too combat-oriented for my taste). Is it still worth it? Probably no one plays it online anymore, but just for the single player campaign(s)?

Buy it, it's great, and it has great mod Co8 with tons of extra content.

Yes, it is very good. Even great, I might say. Granted, I think PS:T has its problems gameplay mechanics-wise, but the quality of the storytelling and characters more than make up for it. It's a game that will make you think, and it's a great adventure taking place in the most interesting setting I've ever seen in any video game thus far.

In fact, the city of Sigil and the surrounding planes as presented in Torment are so exceptionally detailed, that shortly after playing the game over a decade ago I went on a shopping spree and bought most of the Planescape books and boxed sets and it's become my favorite RPG setting which it remains to date. The guys designing the Planescape setting have done an outstanding job, and the guys designing Torment have done an equally outstanding job presenting that setting in their game.

Okay, rant over. If you like computer role-playing games buy PS:T. It's one of- if not the best ever made.
I'm new to DND what game would be a good starting point for a new player like myself.

It depends of your gamestyle, because all of those games are great. I suggest you go this way:
- If you like balanced combat, epic story and great atmosphere go with Baldur's Gate series.
- If you like more story-telling games with less combat I suggest you Planescape: Torment.
- If you like more action games with a lot of fighting I suggest you Icewind Dale series.

/e: Oh, and if you want more modern look and you don't like Infinity Engine I suggest you Neverwinter Nights :)

/e2: And to answer your question: I think Baldur's Gate Trilogy would be the best choice for a new player. It's also my favourite! :D

I bought the boxed retail versions of many of these titles over the years... but it's worth it to buy them again, to get the DRM free versions and not have to worry about disks. So, 9 more games added to my library, at a fantastic price! Great deal, thanks GOG. (And Hasbro, of course.)
