Probably cos older games look crap on HD TV screens, other than that, maybe people dont have their original copies/consoles and now have a chance to replay the game.
HD isnt always 720p or 1080p in games , it could also mean the game supports higher resolutions , modern pc support and newer features like cloud saving , achievements etc
Lol i laughed out hard when people wanted their money back cause age of empires 2 HD had no HD graphics...haha

That was quite comical but it also shows how stupid gamers have become...

When Splinter Cell HD Trilogy (which was a shitty port) came out for PS3, the steam forum erupted with questions whether they were getting it or not. Despite the fact what they had was already above that collections standards. I don't think people realise what some of these collections are.

To be fair, if the graphics of a game were designed to run in 640x480, simply updating the game to be able to run in 1920x1080 is not enough. You'd need a telescope to be able to tell your units apart. I tried a high resolution patch for Diablo 2 once. While it would happily let me set higher resolutions, the game simply wasn't playable above 1024x768, because everything became too small to look at comfortably.
An excuse to play their favourite games again? People are weird, but I fully admit this is the reason for me. Sometimes one needs a good excuse.

That makes sense , all i expect with these remakes are these things 1) fix the original game bugs 2) make the game run on modern systems 3) make it not hurt the eyes anymore
the shadow warrior and duke nukem re-releases on steam were good

Senteria: So I went to gamefaqs today and found this poll: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5284

Apparantly people really like remakes of games. I am pretty indifferent in it. The only good thing about remakes is if they release it on platforms it has not been released on yet so more players can experience the game. Either that or add tons of content and make changes. Just putting a game like Final Fantasy X into HD... seriously. Why would anyone be interested? FF X still looks beautiful in my opinion. The change from PS2 to PS3 in terms of graphics has never been that overwhelming hence the fact I don't own a ps3/xbox360 or wii. A game is more than just graphics. Sure graphics can be appealing, but there's so much more than that. If you're going to remake a game, take a 2D game and turn it into 3D, then it actually changes something. Also games like Final Fantasy VII would in my opinion never capture the soul and essence the original has had. Some things you just can't remake.

Well that's just my thoughts on it.
Three things:
1. Many companies just use HD as a marketing move.
Baldurs Gate already was availible in HD, the often discussed HomeworldHD is based on a game that already got HD-Resolution-Support.
2. Porting a 2D-game in a 3D game is NOT a good HD-Remake:
A good one should just improve the availible resolutions and try to change some details so they are fitting BETTER in the new resolution.
For example textures that have been fine in 640x480 have to be replaced with better ones if the game should look the same (in relativity to the resolution) in 1920x1080!
3. "Just putting a game like Final Fantasy X into HD... seriously. "
That´s not the point: Resolutions below the native resolution of your monitor look blurred and that´s why offering higher resolutions is always better than stay stick to the original ones!

Schnuff: HD remakes are OK if they don't change the gameplay.
The last bad experience is the HD remake of Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny.
But Realms didn't change the gameplay one bit. It was the same just without the good atmosphere and style. Gameplay changes can be good, if they add and improve. I really like the Kings Bounty and Fantasy General remakes. Gameplay nearly the same, but some changes and improvements.
Civ4:Colonization with the fan addon The Authentic Colonization is also really good. Although without the mod it was worse than the original.

That very much depends on how you do it. The best commercial remake I have ever seen is Settlers II 10th Anniversary Edition, which is a 3D remake of a 2D original, and it is fantastic. It improved the things that needed improving, and left everything else exactly as it was.

OK, but that´s not an HD-Remake.
That was a 10th-Anniversary-Edition ;)

Anyways, I thinkt that 2D->3D Conversions in strategy and tactic games are acceptable; in Jump n´ Runs or Adventures this is hard stuff to do nicely!
Two reasons I can think of would be to have the game re-released on a current platform at a much fairer price like The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection for PS3, to give an example. The other reason would be to have a version that looks good on an HDTV because, and I won't be the first one to admit it, older games without special hardware look horrible on anything that isn't a CRT monitor. It is all blurry, dark, and just overall a painful thing to look at.
