Battle for Wesnoth is good for that as it's a turn based strategy game. You have all the time you need to think and not be noticed playing during the lecture.

Who plays games in class?! If you're going to play a game wouldn't you be better off just staying home? I never understood that. There used to be this guy that always played either Mario Kart 64 or Goldeneye, and he sat in the first row!

You take laptops with you at college? I'd be ridiculed if I did something like that. (Then again, I don't have a laptop.)
However, there is one completely idiotic she-creature who 'teaches' morphology. (I'm studying English/Pedagogy.) Usually I sit in the last row (we're always in small groups in classrooms) and pop up my iPhone and some word-matching game like Lexic or IsoWords. Much more useful.
Oh, Bejeweled 2. That too. (...What? Don't look at me like that. >_>)
And when I finally get a spare battery for my PSP, it's back to Dissidia. *hehehe*

Sometimes even in BS classes they throw you a curve ball and staying home means you dont hear about it....
A long long time ago... In a place far far away... in my undergrad days I took an art class *gasp* and had I not shown up I would have missed out on seeing a future ex girlfriend nekkie......
Granted... Had I missed that moment, I could have saved myself an agonizing month long break up....and countless hours of torture....But... by showing up... I helped further my education both on the university level and the nature of crazy chicks...

Haha, nice. I wasn't advocating skipping classes, I was advocating not playing in class.

My classes are online and require tons of reading and papers. It really leaves little time for gaming at all presently.

I didn't play anything because most of my classes would require meticulous note-taking because the professors were afraid nobody was paying attention.

It's not all bad. I can't count the number of times I would have fallen asleep and missed out on something that just so happened to be important if I didn't have Plants vs Zombies to keep me awake. On my end, most of what's covered in lectures is direct from the notes themselves anyway, but like what akwater said, never know when they might just happen to mention something important.
Of course it's not right to pay $10k a year and play it all away, but from my experience, it definitely helps in the learning process - unless one's attention span can last for 2 hours straight. I have a module this semester, and the lecturer is so inept at teaching (to the point that I have to say seeing is believing), that I was thankful for my laptop being there for me for those few lectures that I attended (no talking + 2 hours of glaringly wrong concepts being self-corrected by students in the lecture). 'course I'm not attending the lecture anymore, but that's something else.

Only recently has the idea appealed to me as some of my classes would have long segments of people asking questions or talking about group stuff that ends up taking and 1 hour or class. In my conflict resolution class, I played tic-tac-toe with another classmate to pass the time who was also bored.

Knights of the Chalice or Eschalon Book I.
Most of the times it's hard to play because the fans in your laptop will begin to blow hard and it will catch everyone's attention.
It's also better to play a game with little clicking involved, else the clicking sounds will also catch people's attention. It happened with Larva Mortus.
As to why I play, well I have a TERRIBLE attention span for lectures. After about 45 minutes tops, all of my attention is just about gone. I'm always forced to do my own research once I'm back home. Might as well make use of that time to complete a game that's still in my backlog... life is meant to be enjoyed after all, not to go through useless guilt trips!
