Here's a few real-life examples.
My old math teacher and his family was surrounded by thugs and they were closing a circle. He took his wife and his baby and they ran as shouted as loudly as they could and just charged one of the guys. They were still open enough that it was a 2-on-one situation and they were loud and moving fast. the guy just stepped aside and they ran past safely.
Another situation is one I saw on security footage. A police officer was in a facility holding one gang member in a public waiting room that slowly filled up with people. He was waiting for medical assistance for the gangster, so he had to stay put. Other officers were on the way, but still 5 minutes off. As each person entered the room, the cop would survey his surroundings. He was suspicious.
Suddenly, as if with an invisible cue that only gangsters could see, all of the people in the room stood up and charged after the cop while, simultaneously, roughly 10 people ran into the room from two doors on either side of the room.
In less than a second, that room had at least 20 gangsters targeting one lonely cop. The cop spun like a ballerina on his toe while holding the button on his mace. All 20 guys fell to the floor just as quickly as they had charged him. The closest one was maybe 4 feet away from him.
The cop starting cuffing (and maybe zip-tying? I can't remember how he restrained them exactly). It took him so long that back-up arrived and joined him in the restraining. They all stayed on the ground reeling in agony for several minutes.
I was amazed at how well some mace worked. Carry some whenever you're in a dark alley. I think I may just buy some for Christmas. :)
