IMO, "long" is not a positive quality in point-and-click adventure games. Contrary to RPGs and Action games the gameplay doesn't lend itself to entertain the players for a very long time unless the story is very good, but personally I also prefer compact stories to long-drawn-out ones. You don't want to watch a 100+ movie either. I think that would only work if the stories are more episodic in nature, like a TV series, and with more focus on the characters instead of a plot. But I think sooner or later the puzzles would get in the way of entertainment, too, and wear down the players. Creating such a long adventure game and keeping it interesting for the players would be really hard to pull of, and I doubt anyone in the game industry would be interested in financing such a difficult project.

I guess, one could make a case for Planescape: Torment being the longest point-and-click adventure game in history, but it's not 2D and it also features RPG elements like combat and inventory management. ;) (EDIT: And it's not kid-friendly ...)

kekorangar: ive played all broken sword games except for the last one (the one with 3D graphics). thanks for the reply

3 and 4 both have 3D graphics...
I think Inherit the earth was quite long - but maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

Not exceptionally long but cartoonish and very funny would be the original Sam'n'Max (hit the road).
Given the price I would assume Monkey Island is long or am I totally wrong about that?
I think some of the later Kings Quest games (like around 5 or 6) were pretty long - but not played them much so can't tell you exactly.

It isn't exactly short. It isn't extraordinarily long either. But it is one of the best advevtures ever (if not THE best). Which can make it effeectively long because you can play it again and again and still have fun.

You mean Tales of Monkey Island? I guess that's the longest of all five parts, it seems to be around 14-20 hours long (while the others are probably below 10 hours each).

Anyway, if the OP is interested in average gamelengths, comparing the games in HowLongToBeat's database might help.

The Lost Crown is a pretty long game.
Thanks to everyone but now that I think about it, very stupid question on my part. Some of the greatest games ever are notoriously short and basing cost on time to play is really an insane idea: TRL 1 dollar, Shadow Man $5000.00...I DON'T THINK SO!

anyway, thanks for all the replies guys but some of the games you suggested are hard to find (literally) LOL

edit: what's the longest point and click 2D cartoony graphics adventure game i can find in GOG.com?

and tales of monkey island is expensive! :D i think ill pass on this one, or wait til gog.com puts it on sale

Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why you make all your text bold?

sorry about that, gog.com's forum is kinda confusing without using bold fonts :D ill change it to italics for you

Italics are kind of useless for highlighting here, since all quoted text is automatically italicized. Thus, anything you highlight in your post won't be highlighted when your post is quoted.

Why highlight anything at all, other than specific words for emphasis?

There's a 5th one in the works which is 2D again (but with pre-rendered sprites done in a cellshaded style). Any reason you're so opposed to 3D graphics by the way? The Longest Journey is fully 2D in terms of gameplay, it just uses 3D graphics.
