I'm guessing some of you are having problems getting a number of old Windows 95/98 games to work in XP/Vista/Win7. Do you have a copy of Win98, but no computer to install it? The solution is actually quite easy:
- A computer running XP/Vista/Win7
- Windows Virtual PC 2007
- A copy of Windows 95, 98 or 98 SE.
Download and install Virtual PC and follow the instructions.
Create a new virtual machine within Virtual PC and name it.
Then choose what operating system you're planning to install.
Set amount of RAM (64 MB should do it for Win95/98)
Choose where to install the virtual harddrive. It will be stored as a file. Then choose the amount of space you desire.
Start the Virtual Machine.
Now, you can't boot because the harddrive is empty. Insert Win95/98 (you can either use an original CD-ROM, or a virtual CD-ROM like Daemon Tools, PowerISO etc., either works just as good), and then choose the CD-ROM drive from "CD" in the Virtual PC menu. Then just do a typical installation of Win98 (next, next, next, next....)
Install the Virtual Machine Additions from the Action-menu. These additions gives you more options and smoother running.
Set desktop size and colors (I use 800x600x16 million colors).
Hope this works for all of you guys as well!
Virtual PC is free now? Eh?
Has been for ages
VPC is good for very basic games but you get the most generic video adapter which doesn't really do 3d so anything needing a reasonable gpu isn't going to work too well
For games needing hardware acceleration you're better off with VMware Player.
Virtual PC 2007 is actually preferable to the newer Windows Virtual PC for older games because Windows Virtual PC has 16-bit graphics output only; games that demand 256 colors won't run even if you set the 256 colors mode in the compatibility tab.

Buy and old PC on the eBay and you're good to go....
I'd prefer VirtualBox to VirtualPC. Mainly because their 3D acceleration in virtual machines is great.
Unfortunately there's still no 3D acceleration in Windows 9x guest operating systems, I think. Does anyone know for sure?

2D and 3D acceleration is provided by Guest Additions - which as far as I know do not exist for Win98.

I kept my old Win 98SE gaming rig. There are still a few games that can't be played in Dosbox because they're Windows games, yet don't play in XP/Vista/Win 7 for various reasons.
With win7 now I can play some old games that were unable to run in win xp
