I'm trying to play Wizardry 6, but I'm having some issues with sound. My version is the one that came with The Ultimate Wizardry Archive (the collection of Wizardry 1-7). Namely the sound that plays when you first enter the castle (door opens & closes) just repeats, and it keeps on repeating, even if I switch floor, save & then reload the game.

I'm running the game in dosbox, with soundblaster set as my soundcard.

Just tested my abandonware version using D-Fend Reloaded myself and the sound is indeed rather buggy. The sound is rather weak and having to play the gate sound slows down the game considerably. So I guess there was a reason I had set it to use no sounds.
Bottom line: I suggest playing it withouth sound, since there is apparantly no support for Roland sound, only choppy Soundblaster sound.

This may be enlightening: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=23424%20=8827a5f464e50a8e414a794df31c0833

Last resort if you want good sound is to get an Amiga emulator and playh the Amiga version. Downside is that you can't import characters into Wiz 7.

The game does feel a bit empty without any sound, but it does beat hearing that opening/closing sound over and over at least. So I'll take your advice and play it without any
Dosbox does by the way, as far as I know, not have any support for Roland

Not sure if this will help, but some potential solutions are listed here:

Good luck.
How about doing what the vogons discussion suggested, ie. using the PC speaker sounds instead of Adlib/Soundblaster? According to that discussion, they tried to use the Adlib OPL chip for playing samples, which is kinda what it was not supposed to do. :)

(I have the Wizardry Archives compilation too, but I've really just played Wizardy Gold (ie. the Win3.1 version of Wizardry 7).

As long as you installed Munt in Windows, or have a real Roland unit, DOSBox can pass the MIDI messages to the MIDI unit (or Munt), and the Roland MT-32 sounds are played fine by either Munt or the real Roland MIDI module.

There is also some special DOSBox build ("Ynghwog's" or something) which has "Munt" built in, but I prefer installing BASSMIDI+Munt separately as that works with all games, even GOG DOSBox games not running in the special DOSBox build.

But, I am unsure if Wizardry 6 had any Roland MT-32 support anyway. MT-32 couldn't play digital samples, e.g. speech or digitized sound effects.

Sadly that did not solve the repeating sound problem.

In fact, I can't even hear any difference between the PC-speaker & Sounblaster mode, which is odd (I would expect it to be a huge difference, considering how bad PC-speaker sound usually sounds)

I'm a bit curious how the game would sound with the PC Speaker only option, but I couldn't get it to work with D-Fend Reloaded.
Bit late to the party, I know, but you might want to look into this: http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/tools/dosbox/

You can read this for more informations and instructions about the specific sound problem in Wizardry 6: http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=672
