htown1980: I discovered dos gaming via such amazing games as:

Alley Cat
Striker
Moon Patrol
Tapper
Jump Joe
Digger

That was a time when computer games were computer games and people who played games were nerds.
Digger was also one of my first PC games. I played that and Montezuma's Revenge all the time on my family's Leading Edge model C XT clone.

I wish I still had them. :(

kalmis666: Feel old when I say this, but it was back in the early 90's. Commander Keen was oneof the first games. There was also this top-down RPG which I can't remember what it was called. Something with wind in the title, might have been closer to mid 90's that as well.
Castle of the Winds? It was a Win3.1 game...
I miss this.

spindown: How did I discover DOS gaming? That's a funny question. When I was a teenager DOS was simply the cutting edge of gaming technology. There were no Windows (3.1) games to speak of and using the command line was perfectly natural. So I didn't really "discover" DOS, it was pretty much the only way to use a computer at the time.

That's the one! Thanks.
I didn't own a PC until Windows 95 and it was already an old PC by then. So my first experience with DOS was playing Doom at friends' houses when I would visit in my younger years (I'm scarred for life!). I only knew a few commands and never messed around with memory to get games working back then.

I took a couple PC hardware courses (A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, third edition I think) where I swapped hard drives and worked on different operating systems, so I learned quite a few commands and tricks then but I went on to do other things and never really put it to much use. I've forgotten most of it now. I don't even really try to mess with DOSbox. I could get the hang of it again, but I just don't really want to.
