Is this worth keeping? It's worth 5,000 g and I'm pretty much at the beginning of the game.

It's a decent weapon, and probably the best thing you can put in Khelgar's hands at the moment. You will be selling it eventually, just compare it against the other options and use it until it's no longer your best weapon choice.

Whatever you do, don't take the weapon focus, weapon specialization, or improved critical feats to improve it. You will find much better later in the game. Fair warning, the most powerful weapon in the game is a Warhammer that can only be used by Dwarves, so for most parties Khelgar will be the only character who can wield it. Picking weapon specialization feats in any other weapon category is effectively wasted on him.

It works perfect against Trolls. You will find much better weapons later. You can even create them yourself.
