I'm trying out the spear as a main weapon for a bard (x) / fighter (2) as a concept for the OC (NWN2). I like the critical damage of the spear, and using bard buffs to improve defense rather than heavy armour. So far I'm in Chapter 1 at the Graveyard, at Bard (4) Ftr (1). I've taken Power Attack, Cleave, Combat Expertise (for increased AC when surrounded), and Curse Song. Then I'll take Extend Spell and Lingering Song.

This is a role-playing build, not a power build, but I'm surprised at how well it works. The level of fighter makes it possible to go the heavy armour and shield route if needed, but so far it hasn't been. And UMD means that I can use wands and scrolls.

What other builds would be effective using light armour and a spear?

====================================================================

My build is:
Human
Str: 16 (further points here)
Dex: 14
Con: 12
Int: 14
Wis: 8
Chr: 14 (increase with items)

Skills: Perform (max), Tumble (high), UMD and some conversational skills

Typically, the only build that uses spears (since they're an inferior weapon compared to rapiers or scimitars) are stormlords druids or clerics.
I suppose I found The Viper's fight with The Mountain (in Game of Thrones) an inspiration. I won't argue about weapon superiority; this is just for fun..

Far be it from me to tell you how to play the game, it's all good as long as you have fun. I was just answering your question about spear using builds.
Stormlords get a pretty big lightning damage boost on top of their standard divine buffs so they're pretty good. The only drawback is that they're a bit too dependent on short term buffs, so it can be a bit annoying buffing before every fight.
I am lightly remembering builds with spears using Barbarians and Rangers. My memory is blury hence i might be completely wrong.
Yes, another build I've wondered about was a barbarian with Dodge and Mobility :)

Hmm... the closest to the concept of "lightly armoured warrior" in NWN2 would be something like the Swashbuckler, but their abilities don't really work with spears. (Can't finesse them.) Which is a shame.

So you have to be
* Strength-based
* With enough DEX to make light armour viable anyway
* Probably get monkey-grip so you can use a shield/spear combo. (Well, the Viper did. You don't need to)

Your proposed Bard character would be fine, I think. Bards are great characters, and perhaps the ideal player character for the OC. (Because they're helpful no matter what party you use, and can deal with all the situations the OC throws at you.)

You could simply make a Fighter/Rogue type character. Add in Neverwinter Nine for extra speed and sneak attacks, Shadowdancer for hitting and running, focus mainly on fighter levels and strength, and wear a mithral chain shirt and use a small shield. (or forget about the shield and just stab things.) Get the Feint feat too, both to help with the attack penalty from Monkey Grip and to get extra sneak attacks, and because it fits the "smart sneaky fighter" archetype. (Indeed, I'd give such a character much the same stats as your bard.)

This build won't be spectacularly powerful by any means, but it should work fine, and its fighting style would fit the concept quite well. Many foes in the OC are immune to sneak attacks, but since you'd probably only take 3-7 rogue levels that wouldn't be a big deal. You get quite a lot of skillpoints, so it should be fun to play in the OC if you take things like Bluff and Diplomacy.

A barbarian would work, but "barbarian rage" doesn't really seem to fit the "lightly armoured fights smart" Viper-type character.

As proposed, a Stormlord (say, Favoured Soul/Stormlord) would be great at using a spear, but as a powerful divine caster it's a very different beast from "lightly armoured spearman."
I like the idea of Fighter-Rogue with Feint. One day I'll try that out. NWN9 is not something I've ever tried either, but I'll look into it!

Neverwinter Nine is a very useful "addon" class because it doesn't have any prerequisites (except Attack Bonus 6) and offers plenty of useful things to other classes: high base attack bonus, 4 skill points per level, pretty good saving throws and some very nifty special abilities.

Pertinent for the Fighter Rogue is that 3 levels of NN9 gives +2D6 Sneak Attack, which is the same as you'd get from 3 levels of Rogue, except you also get better BAB and some useful other abilities, like an aura that boosts allies and faster movement, as well as an improved version of the "shield other" spell. (Great for keeping the party wizard alive, if need be.) Quite versatile.

Plus, the class fits makes sense when you're playing the OC. (Though with Storm of Zehir you can take it as soon as you want, instead of having to wait until you're offered the position in the storyline.)
