Delicious copypasta:

You can find a more centralized location for learning about active persistent worlds (non-campaign oriented servers) over on the BioWare Social Forums.

For a more intimate gameplay experience you can arrange to play with other people over at Neverwinter Connections.

Regarding persistent worlds, many use custom content that you must download prior to joining the server (you will get an error that you are missing required files, usually with a .hak or .tlk file extension, otherwise). These persistent worlds should direct you to a location to download these files, such as the Installation Guide we use.

The ultimate question to ask however, is what sort of gameplay experience you are looking for in multiplayer: casual, roleplay, action, PvP, party, or any combination thereof and more. Armed with that knowledge, choosing a server you will be able to enjoy becomes much easier.
thats very helpful, but i have another question regarding the servers..My only other real experience with online roleplaying games is Diablo 2, it was very simple to me, I chose my character, then every server i joined, i was the character i chose..It seems every server i choose on Neverwinter Nights requires me to create a new character? I am just simply not familiar with this game
Of course you need to create a new character.

If you go on a server for 1st - 5th level PCs and some other server popped you up to 30th level, well it would hardly be fair now would it?

Aside from that, this depends solely on whether said server runs a Server or a Local vault for PCs. Local Vault PCs are stored on the player's computer. Server Vault PCs are stored on the server.

Anyone can cheat a LV PC 67 ways or more, whereas a SV PC is much more secure against cheaters. SV PCs are also quite often subject to setting restrictions of the world in question.

And yes, Neverwinter Connections (linked above) is a good place to try and find a RP campaign style game (definitely the exact opposite of Diablow).
Ahh, I see your point, thank you for your input.., After going into a few servers I see that all the

servers seem to be completely new games (or modules) with a beginning and end, that's

very exciting, But I want to commit myself to one character, are the servers reliable

enough to put 100s of hours into? or will they expire eventually, leading me to create a new

character from scratch?

How stable the servers are is entirely dependent on who is running it. The only way I see to answer your question is to explain who is running the servers. The answer there is, Anyone who owns NWN and want to. Some servers can come and go in a day. Others have been up and running since just after NWN was released. It all depends on the person who is hosting the game.

When a person starts up a server they have the option to make it a server vault or local vault game. If it is a server vault game the PC's of the player are saved and loaded fron the computer of the person running the server. If they run it as a local vault game the PC's are loaded and saved to the computer of the persom playing the game. Most people who run Servers elect to run server vaults. One of the main reasons behind this is it allows them better control over what is in there world. With a lot of custom content in the community a characters rolled up on one server may not even be compatable with other servers. Some servers use content that other servers do not even have access to. This can cause some major glitches if they allowed character played on other servers to join there game.

This is also true of a lot of the single player modules.
To the OP.

That is a good observation for a beginner. Interesting way of putting it also....that every server is a new game....because that is exactly what they are really.

As many said here already there are many servers that have been along for a very long time. The thing with private servers is that sometimes you can of course expect something peculiar or something negative...however most of the time, on most servers, you will just be having fun.

If you have special fears you can choose any of theese long going servers with many players....myself I am going in the opposite direction though....I am trying to find new servers that are not so popular yet.

The thing with servers is...that most of them seem to survive somehow....especially the ones that made it this far. I mean even when a server goes down because the original hoster wants to quit there is always some other happy puppy willing to carry on....and usually the module is past along and sometimes even released to the public, meaning anyone can host the server again....

So I wouldn't be so afraid of a server going down. Firstly because it probably wont just dissapear all of a sudden and secondly because you will be having fun along the way. While playing I mean. Looking from a Zen perspective a little bit there :-P

To cut it short...I invite you very much to check out the guild we have at X-Fire...for tips on some good servers (especially if you are into roleplaying) and perhaps getting this nice software to be able to chat with other players....

See ya maybe!
Thank you all for your input, I understand the situation much better. If there is anyone out there willing to play with a brand new beginner i could really use the experience, as im a little over whelmed about how to begin, id like to roleplay with other people eventually, but im not just not sure where to begin.

Also, the X-fire website is a good place to start, but it seems a overwhelming. I was a little confused where to begin there as well..Haha, I am starting to feel like I'm hopeless, did anyone else take this long or feel this confused when beginning theyre multiplayer experience?

All servers will expire eventually, so it is best just to jump in and start enjoying the community. You will find that there will be very few people who won't help you learn the game, whether or not their interests may be somewhat self-serving, to keep the playerbase alive so that they will still have people to play with.

Depending on the server you want to join, learning curves can be vastly different, but the availability of help is usually ever-present. On Higher Ground, we try to handle a lot of introduction and general information through the use of our Wiki in addition to forums, but new players just as often get their questions answered in-game with perhaps a bit less work to hunt down information.

The question I will reiterate though is that, while important that a server should be reliable enough for your time spent there not to be undone in short time, finding a server that best fits the type of game you want to play is something that I would consider more pertinent to your search; if you aren't enjoying the game you're playing, why play it? If you liked the gameplay of Diablo 2 online, I would recommend looking into action servers rather than roleplay servers, for example...but that may be personal bias. Your interest in roleplaying with other people may point you towards more casual action servers, such as the World of Aenea.

Well, every server will cease operations eventually....

I've been running a RP campaign on Neverwinter Connections since Q4 2004. And it's still going well.

So you just need to find the right situation/group/people for yourself to game with.

KyleCoffey: Also, the X-fire website is a good place to start, but it seems a bit messy, and cluttered. I was a little confused where to begin there as well..Haha, I am starting to feel like I'm hopeless, did anyone else take this long or feel this confused when beginning theyre multiplayer experience?
Hehe...there is a lot of commercials that might make the Xfire website feel messy at first...but it is really not. First there is my free text on the page...where I choose to put a description of what the guild/community is about and a couple of recomended servers.

If you scroll further down you will see any screenshots and videos made by community members and also a real-time info list about the recomended server (their status, amount of players and so on).

Also there is a full list of online and offline players (roster), a forum, a news section and who knows what else...

You can actually get a lot of information from that page without even installing Xfire which is kind of cool. However...I do recomend installing it. It is by no means "necessary" for playing NWN but in general and specifically for playing on low population server I personally think it is a must.

Besides, this is a multiplayer game, which is all about playing "together"....so any means of communicating also outside of the game can't be bad right? MSN, Skype, Facebook, Xfire....you name it....

Anyway...to cut this a little bit short...let's just say that most of us starting out in multiplayer on NWN at first where a bit confused. Don't be afraid though...just jump in there...and you will land on your feet...I promise...

I wouldn't mind give you a voice-chat walkthrough on any of the servers from our recomended list or just voice-chat about this game in general. You do have a headset right?

Ok..maybe see ya ;-)

Well I have everything I need now, thanks to the X-fire website, Only now I need a headset, from what I have read its a must. Thank you for helping me out, I cant wait to choose a server and get started..I tried making a "Drizzt Do'Urden" and the server i chose told me i could'nt be a well known adventurer. I Thought that was awesome! This is my first roleplaying experience with others, and its cool how enthused other people are..Thank You!
Oh...headset is not a must...but if you wanted a rundown on a specific PW it would help. You could of course naturally just start playing and eventually you would get the hang of it....we can still write text and such...which is slower....but....
Im playing in Narfelli Now i believe the server is called, Thanks to your Xfire recommendation, And im having a great time, Thanks!
Great! Narfel is a server I don't play at so much myself at the moment but it is definately one I can recomend (why it is still on the list). I should point out that Narfell was traditionally one of the most low magic / low loot worlds out there. Maybe it has changed lately but also the welcoming feeling of the players over there usually weigh up for the difficulties and harshness of the world. What I am saying is...that you have chosen a quite hard and hardcore roleplayers world to start with. Not a bad decision though...I wish you all the luck over there and maybe I log in there too hehe :-)
