Picking up where I left off a few months ago in NWN2, the game refused to start - instead I get a system message that I have to install DirectPlay to run the game.

Even though I have run the game before and never got this message, I had recently updated the system to Windows 8.1 and thought perhaps this would be the reason for the lack of DirectPlay (since it is a depreciated API now)

So the game runs after installing that, but during the loading screen the progress bar blinks from 0% to 100% like it is having an epileptic shock as does the text that says "Unpacking modules" - it's really freaky. The box around the game-tips text on the loading screen is very large also, much larger than it needs to be - perhaps it was always like this, I don't remember.

The game loads in the end, despite these graphic glitches, though in game the box that presents the activity text (i.e. things that are happening, status of characters, etc.) is always about 3 lines larger than the text in it, so there is a space of about 3 lines beneath the text. The scroll arrows reflect that and are positioned like the size of the box ends where the text ends but it is larger.

I have updated NWN2 with the most recent GOG patch, and it ran perfectly on Windows 8 just a few months ago.
I'm using an AMD 7900 series card, Windows 8.1

I tried re-installing the game, but it changed nothing.

These are not game breaking things, but this game ran flawlessly only a few months ago on the same system (except it was Windows 8)

Anyone else on Windows 8.1 see anything strange when playing NWN or had this DirectPlay install request. Any idea what could be happening and what's with the interface glitching?

I considered that this *could* be a rendering issue, but I can't imagine how, everything looks just fine except for the boxes around certain texts and the loading screen.

(I can't seem to take a screenshot of the game, the Windows+PrintScreen combination just gives me a screenshot of the desktop!)

Yes. I had to install DX9 to get it to run, but no problems since.
Try running it in Compatibility Mode (Win XP SP3).

It's important, that you install the version 9 of DirectX as it complements DirectX11 with components needed for some older games. You wrote you already did, but just in case here's the link to DirectX 9 Webinstaller:

Thanks for that!

In fact it was enough to run the game in Windows 8 compatibility mode for the graphics glitches to disappear :)

Everything works smooth now.
