Hi.

The game launches in 1024x768 and when I enter the options, the resolution field is completely blank and I cannot change anything.

Now, I found out that a common solution is to ALT+ENTER into the windowed mode, and then change the resolution. However, nothing happens - the field is still completely blank.

I also tried editing the .ini/ini2 files, but also nothing changed.

If it matters, I am running the game on a 1060 laptop with fully updated graphics drivers.

Does anyone know a solution to this?

Thanks

In nwn2.ini, is the refresh rate set to match your screen, I think it may default to 60 when some screens need 59.

Thanks for the reply.

My screen refresh rate is set at 144Hz, so I went ahead and changed the nwn2.ini to 143Hz. Nothing. I also tried 59Hz, 60Hz, and 144Hz, just to be safe. Still nothing.

I doubt the game supports 144Hz.
Just out of curiosity, you could try setting your display to run a 60Hz (In Nvidia Control Panel, or Windows display adapter properties)
And see if the game then gives you a full list of resolution options.
Make sure the game uses your dedicated graphics chipset not the integrated one. Normally you should be able to set this in your AMD or NVIDIA control-panel. Once that is done you should also take a look at your OS's power-saving options. In there are settings which allows your OS to set processes to run on the integrated graphics chipset irrespective of any changes you've made. Check to make sure that you change the settings in all power-saving plans! Windows has the habit of keeping certain options from other plans ... Can't remember since when this is the case, XP maybe? (Not having that stupidity in other OS's - oh, well -)

Next thing could be your Internet/Security suite that keeps sandboxing your games executable. Whatever you change, if it allows you to change anything at all, isn't kept or applied. If it isn't 3rd party software, defender/AV etc. could also be the culprit, in that it contains and/or blocks certain things.

While at it you should also make sure that you have full - as in administrative rights access - to the folders the game is writing to or saving files in. Running it in administrator mode or taking ownership of folders or granting +r+w rights should help.

Compatibility modes don't do much anything as the game runs fine in Win10.

One stupid mistake that's happening but is going unnoticed is to open a file in notepad, edit it, save it. It's saving the changes alright ... just not as .ini but .txt file.

You could also try to install it on C drive or if it is installed on C install it on D partition/drive. Make sure not to have it install in C:\NWN2 or D:\NWN2 else you will lose all your data/files on your drive when you uninstall the game! This applies not only to NWN but any GOG game, as the installer will wipe all folders on that drive ...

Okay, weird stuff - can't seem to downgrade the refresh rate, 144Hz is the only option to select from the dropdown menu. Also, Windows is using integrated graphics. So, I went ahead and excluded NWN2 from the nVidia launch panel and ran the game using Intel 630. Nothing happened, except the antialiasing option went from x8 to x16 (it was limited to 8x before).

Also, I can't change the display adapter to 1060, so this all might be on my end.

Would you be able to share your nwn2.ini and a screenshot of your in-game settings? Also, which security suite is running on your device?

Hey, I just tried everything from your post - the battery is set for full performance, I'm the sole administrator and the only partition on my hard drive is C (I really can't be bothered to create a D partition right now :)).

As for the security suite, it's Windows Defender (I've added the game to go through the firewall) and MalwareBytes (disabled completely). I've copied the .ini2 file below.

Thanks!

You're most welcome! Before I dig into it please share your nwn.ini also, same folder as the other. (You'll certainly forgive poor old me for having forgotten to ask about this in my last post :-)) When there is only one partition there's no need to bother creating one.

There is one last question I would like to ask: Which resolution are you aiming for? 1920x1080? Just asking because you keep writing something about 1060 just to make sure we're on the same page there.

Hey, sorry, the 1060 I've mentioned is GeForce GTX 1060, so a graphics card. Yeah, I'm aiming for 1920x1080, although I'd settle for anything widescreen.

Here's the .ini file:

Thanks, again :)
Also there is another question i would like to ask you. How do you start the game? Galaxy/2.0? Or shortcut on your desktop? See whether this makes any difference.

After checking your nwn2.ini there's nothing wrong there. Maybe the refresh rate you should set to 60.

One thing that came to mind while thinking how the problem could be solved if all else fails:
Change the setting from fullscreen to window mode (.ini or in-game whatever works), restart the game, change the resolution, and switch back to fullscreen. (That is if you haven't also tried that already).

The last straw is to check the files and see whether there is a corruption.

Edit
HA! Something else to check came to my mind. The newest revision NVIDIA drivers allow you to set scaling and smoothness. That's both in the 3D options as well as for your monitor. Maybe there is where the culprit is, *fingers crossed*.

I usually start from Galaxy 2.0, but whenever I tinker with the .ini files, I just run it from the .exe there. It made no difference.

I've tried setting it to 60Hz, as well the windowed mode trick.

The final thing to do is to verify the files through Galaxy or simply reinstall.

I'll let you guys know if it works. Until then, thanks :)
When it still doesn't work try this: Start the game with administrative rights for all accounts via nwn2main.exe first -> change the resolution -> exit -> restart. If that doesn't do the trick try with nwn2main_amdxp.exe and see whether that makes any difference at all. Both of the aforementioned files can be found in the installation folder of the game.

I hope you can sort this problem out so you can finally enjoy the game. Best of luck to you!

I found the solution and I can't believe how stupid all this was.

The .ini files I've edited this whole time were the ones from the game's folder (e.g Program Files - GOG Galaxy - Games - NWN2). Those don't seem to do anything.

The .ini file which actually does something is nwn2.ini found in the Documents folder (This PC - Documents - Neverwinter Nights 2).

And that's it - the game runs fine in FHD.

Thanks and sorry for wasting your time with this non-issue :)
