I invested in the ability to counter attack, but am unsure on how to actually counter attack an opponent.

Page 14 and 15 of the manual.

Icon on the opponents body will turn into a sword for a short time. Thats when you press the LMB. But you have to be blocking for the technique.

I was just about to ask. Sadly I just rickroll the monsters instead of blocking them.
