Entirely random. There's no real skill. Once you understand the basic rule of the game, it's up to luck.
It's a game of chance. At least, once you know the relevant probabilities. You go for the most probable outcome that can beat the opponent's. And then it's just up to luck.
thats what i though but i heard in witcher 1 the dice rules are different and there is some certain skills. I never play first one though. When witcher 2 explain the rules I first thought it was like texas hold'em and then I realize it is not the same thing. Now I have to quick save everytime I won and if I lost next game i load my last save. So frustrating.

There were only two things different in The Witcher 1:
1) Dice that roll off the table still count.
2) Best of 3.
ahhh...same thing after all...sign well is there any cheating mods for it

I can't remember the guy's name, but he's the champion in Loc Muinne. I rolled five sixes natural in our match.

I was laffin' my butt off. Never ever seen that roll, TW1 or TW2.

There was once when the NPC rolled his dice off the table. I nearly fell out of my chair.

Anyway I beat a supposedly master in dice poker on first try. And next I know I lose 4 times in a row to a dwarf. So yeah it depends a lot on luck, i.e. there is nothing to master.

Good thing you can keep trying until you win so it is not like you fail a quest if you lose.
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
Know when to run

i don't know the control for keyboard but if you're using 360 controller you can press X button to select the highlighted dice. Then press A to re-roll the dice. There are trick but most of them depends on luck.
i figure it out you can use mouse and left click highlight dice and use spacebar to reroll them thanks

I've noticed that when an NPC rolls a die off the table on his first throw, he can somehow still reroll them, but from what I can tell I can't do the same.

Also I liked the best two out of three rule from The Witcher 1 alot better, for some reason it seems to me that this evened the odds a little.

That's pretty damn good with 5 dice. ;)

It's all just chance anyway.. Sometimes I get a great hand, sometimes I suck. I've won sometimes with a bad hand, and lost with a good one. The only thing that is not fair is that if your opponent loses a die off the table, he gets it back. If you overshoot and lose a die - you have to play with 4.
