So I've been running into this issue as some others have and i'm not quite sure what to do about it outside of either just playing on pins and needles like its a BGS game expecting it to crash, play something else when I wanted to play Witcher 3, or just say screw it and play it on one of my consoles which would suck cause my PC can almost play this in 4k 60fps if I really wanted to.

If it was just my PC it would be one thing but others have been reporting on this also and Witcher 3 is the only one that is doing this screen freeze and then crashing. That and when I played this last months ago on Steam it didn't do this. But now both the Steam and GOG version do it.

It seems to happen the most I've noticed in dialogue. Witcher 3.exe itself produces no crash report.

PC Rig System Information:

OS: Windows 10 Professional 64-bit 1909 build
Processor: Ryzen 5 2600x 4.2 Ghz
CPU Cooler: Kraken X62 AIO Cooler
Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Plus
Memory: Corsair Vengenance 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz
Storage: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVMe SSD
Storage: 2TB Seagate Burrcada 7200 RPM HDD
Video: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti ICX FTW3
Power: EVGA Supernova 750w 80+ Bronze
Monitor: Acer Predator XB241H 144hz G-Sync
Speakers: Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers
Case: NZXT h500 Model

Made sure to install Witcher 3 GOTY in a non protected system folder. So it's not in Program Files or the x86 folder.

Latest Nvidia Drivers installed cleanly when I updated them and in game settings everything is maxed out at 1080p. Even tried turning off V-sync and capping framerate and uncapping it. Tried Borderless as well as Full Screen mode. Same results. The GTX 1080 Ti is only factory overclocked. Tried also putting Nvidia profile for game at maximum performance and still..... Hell even removed all my texture mods that have never caused this before and made sure it was a clean install with new setting files and still no progress.

So anyone have any advice please?

Hello. I was hating it too, until I found a fix.

Delete nvidia drivers completely (use display driver uninstaller from guru3d or any other good software) and install 399.24 version (do not install geforce experience).

It will 99% fix the problem for you.

Just make sure Windows 10 doesn't auto-update your drivers from 399.24 to a newer version.

Have fun playing.

How do I stop Windows from updating the rollbacked driver? As soon as I installed the old driver Windows update basically said nope were updating you to the latest driver we have at our disposal. I can't believe Nvidia hasn't done anything for this apparent issue GTX 1080tis suffer running this game. Guess when its no longer their flagship card they don't care :sigh:
