MarkoH01: Oh, I do my research and I know where to find said information. It does not change the fact though that this information is not always available (and especially not at release) and that there's no guarantee it stays that way. I own quite a lot of such Steam games as well - still I would prefer GOG every single day.
I wasn't trying to nag on your stance if you might've thought that, btw. I was mainly trying to talk about mostly OLDER games which many have bought/tested/etc already and built up information on for others to make use of.

I also like GOG more than most store due to the DRM free aspect, though steam often has good sales & smaller stores like Gamersgate sell some rare hard to find foreign made games and the like.

MarkoH01: There is no reason to install the extracted exe at all. You simply start it.

Imo we need to realize that the term DRM Free is taken stronger by some and more loosely by others. Having to use a client to even download a game is DRM for many people. Having to be online to start a game even if you don't have to log in is DRM for many people. However some simply want to be able to play there games whenever they want - just like it has been said - having control over it after you have bought it. I personally don't care having to download through a client as long as I am allowed to uninstall the client afterwards and my game will launch whenever I want on whatever PC I want.

But imo Steams problem regarding DRM is not that you have to use a client - the most important problem for me (and I am only talking about my personal opinion here), is that you cannot know in advance if a game will be runnable without the client and if it stays that way. Yes, you could back up or even rollback the files but that could also mean that you'd miss future updates that happened AFTER they added DRM. That's why even such a copy of a game on Steam would never be my first choice.
Agreed, I am a control freak when it comes to my games, and getting locked out even when installed due to mandatory updates is a real threat that happened to me, and I was locked out for about 5 years! (2008 crash)

If you're connected to the internet via Ethernet cable even with offline mode on, the client still phones home to flag for updates in the background, so if you lose your internet in between the mandatory updates, you are essentially locked out of your game!

That's even before you have a denuvo infection with your game, as they randomly phones home and mandates further authentication whether you're connected or not! (Was locked out of 6 of my denuvo-infected titles for nearly a month!)

EDIT: The steam client that is, and not GoG Galaxy naturally!
