Religion, video games, sports, and opium, all these things (and probably some more) fulfill the same purpose:
they distract and make their users dull to the really important issues in live.

We could also call them a modern equivalent of "bread and circuses".

"keep 'em entertained, and they won't revolt."
probably this is the closest to my view
while it is not as bad as some drugs can be , still games can ruin lives
most people can keep playing to acceptable level, but some can't, and they need help
and some games are clearly designed to use out these people

The modern term for this is 'tittytainment'.
