Once more, I'd like to hold a giveaway to bring a bit more attention to Awesome Games Done Quick - a charity gaming marathon - which will feature over 150 hours of live speedruns, non-stop until January 10th. All donations go directly to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

This event represents the pinnacle of speedrunning; watch the mad-skilled fun via stream, donate if you like and win lots of prizes at gamesdonequick.com.

== The Giveaway ==

[prize] One marvelous GOG copy of Volgarr the Viking [/prize]

Hint: get pumped and listen to Volgarr's glorious soundtrack while reading.

= Overview =

As mighty Viking warriors you are facing a nightmarish hellspawn (aka The Boss). For this battle, each of you posts a list of 15 actions to perform. Your terrible foe will execute 15 actions of its own, only revealed at giveaway closure. Then I will throw dice and run the numbers, and we will see who will emerge victoriously.

= How to play =

You need to make a battle list of 15 actions in sequence (a 15-step list, should look like this random example). Choose from the seven actions mentioned below. Similar to turn-based RPG combat, you won't really know what the monster you are fighting will do at each step. Luckily, the tribe's shaman threw a prophetic vision your way, which might be helpful when planning your strategy.

She says:

"I know that I hung on a windy tree, sheltered from flame close-by. And before the blaze, a moment tranquil. Raidō, the towering shadow does not reach far. A Norweg chart of the broadsword and the beast unveils an opportunity."

If you can't figure this riddle out, just ignore it and create your battle list however you feel best. Who cares about the ramblings of a lunatic bone caster anyway...

In the beginning your health is at 45 hit points. Damage you take will make this go down. If at 0 hit points, you are super dead.

Note: All dice mechanics and numbers are only mentioned as a reference to help you plan your battle list. YOU JUST POST YOUR BATTLE LIST AND YOU ARE DONE. All the number crunching (& dice rolling) will be performed by me at the end of the giveaway.

= Actions to choose for your battle list =

Now, choose one of these seven actions per step in your 15-action sequence:
(d6 refers to a six-sided die; 1d6 means result of one die thrown, 2d6 - two dice thrown, etc.)

Sword Attack - deals 1d6 damage (+2 flame sword bonus if your health is at or above 35 hit points); take no ranged boss attack damage this step

Spear Charging - following action must be Spear Throw

Spear Throw - deals 1d6 damage (+1d6 damage if charged); take no boss melee attack damage this step

Shield Reflect - if hit this step, reduce damage taken by 1d6 and reflect (deal) 1d6 damage

Berserker Freak-Out - deals 2d6 damage but take 1d6 damage (take no boss attack damage this step)

Prayer to Odin - heals 1d6 hit points up to maximum hit points of 45

Glimpse of Valhalla - (can only be used 1x) if death arrived this step or one step prior, character resurrects with 20 hit points, and subsequent actions execute as planned

Again, here's a random example battle list.

= Miscellaneous info =

At each step in the sequence, both your action and the monster's execute simultaneously. Hit points of the boss are unknown to you. They will scale with the number of participants. This is a cooperative fight, meaning: damage dealt by all warriors combines to decrease the monster's hit points. The damage the monster deals hits each warrior, if conditions allow (see actions above). But you just worry about yourself, this is just extra info.

= Winning conditions =

Sometime on January 11th, this ends. I will then use some real dice to see how the battle went, write up a battle report and announce the winner. Whether or not the monster is left standing, is not relevant in the end (though will feel epic if achieved no doubt).

You win this, if:

1. Your warrior is alive after your 15 actions executed
2. If more than one warrior is alive (or all died), the warrior with the most damage dealt wins
3a. If there is a tie, the alive warrior who has the most hit points left wins
3b. If all warriors end up dead and there's still a tie after 2., the warrior who survived longest wins
4. Still a tie, random.org decides

= Some additional rules =

You can play for someone else who decided not to be in for the giveaway
Only one player can be in for any particular person
Playing just for fun is fine
IF YOU'VE EDITED YOUR ENTRY, TELL ME IN A NEW POST (else I'll likely miss it).

Final note: this thing has barely been tested, so please forgive me should stuff go awry. If I discover a real screaming black hole in my set-up I will do my best to patch it. Hope this proves at least more fun than a simple random draw - good luck and happy battling :)

=.=

EDIT: Made changes: Warrior's and the monster's actions execute simultaneously. Also, winning conditions point 3 has been corrected and expanded.

Not in for the prize, but I will play for fun with an unusual strategy:

1-15: Prayer to Odin

(Notice that I'm not even trying to attack here.)
All entries within rules so far, thanks, well done :)

hyperagathon: Didn't figure out the riddle, would kick the crone in the teeth for trying to use English instead of Old Norse.
Archaic Norse would make the riddle a bit too tough. That's why she talks future-tongue ;)

EDIT: I particularly like the harsh contrast in hyperagathon's and dtgreene's approaches :D

Not in for the prize, but this sounds like fun.

Like the attitude of my fellow contestants XD
Perhaps the damage done by hypersgathon will offset the lack of it by dtgreene...

Here's my shot, I've attempted to understand the riddle (though I doubt I did) and just went with what seems a likely combo of doing damage and staying alive.

Sword Attack
Spear Charging
Spear Throw
Berserker Freak Out
Shield Reflect
Prayer to Odin
Sword Attack
Sword Attack
Berserker Freak Out
Shield Reflect
Prayer to Odin
Shield Reflect
Prayer to Odin
Shield Reflect
Sword Attack
PLEASE NOTE:

Noticed some flaws (sorry), had to make these adjustments:

A) Under "= Miscellaneous info =" I changed this line:

At each step in the sequence, your action executes first, then the monster's.

into this line:

At each step in the sequence, both your action and the monster's execute simultaneously.

Realised it's a bit brutal when at full hit points to first heal with Prayer to Odin and not getting any benefit, and then perhaps having the monster deal damage to you in the same step.

=.=

B) Under "= Winning conditions =" I changed this line:

3. If there is a tie, the warrior who has the most hit points left wins

to this:

3a. If there is a tie, the alive warrior who has the most hit points left wins
3b. If all warriors end up dead and there's still a tie after 2., the warrior who survived longest wins

Just now saw that it's mad dumb to look for any hit points left with dead warriors. Sorry. Hopefully all unbroken now :P

=.=

Also, if you have any questions about the mechanics of this whole thing or in case anything's left unclear - please let me know. Will be glad to explain :) Thanks.

Haha, thanks. Amon Amarth - that's the spirit! I figure you might enjoy this Volgarr-related track :) And QA never handled a Flame Sword before, what do you expect? :D
