Exactly, western support to some of the rebel groups in the fight against IS. Russia supporting the regeim in Syria. Turkey attacking one of the other groups. It's all about your perspective. Just a mass of violence until the "winner" takes charge.

Okie doke!
I suppose Crusader Kings and other such grand strategy games have this as a possibility depending on the size.

Is that an actual game? That would be very distasteful to make games about an ongoing war! ... On the other hand, propaganda will always use all available media. So I'm not surprised.

Except Wednesday. It knows what it did.

toxicTom: And if the rebels are considered the bad guys, they're not called rebels but terrorists.

Leroux: Apart from these two considerations, I guess most games also want the players to feel more heroic by having them beat the odds, being part of a smaller group that is fighting the power, instead of just belonging to a majority force that is more powerful than the opponents right from the start (possibly even without the players' involvement). So for the players to feel more important, the opposing rebel group would have to be better equipped than the government in order to pose a serious threat, and I can imagine that this would quickly lead to the tables being turned, the rebel force seizing the power and the supporters of the former government becoming rebels themselves (making the rebels good again).

I'm not that into Star Wars, so excuse my ignorance, but isn't that what happens there, too? Are there no games that take place during those periods when the Empire to be is still fighting the Republic, as evil "rebels"?
it's also how the powers that be keep the masses satiated, with the idea that some hero will come save everyone and correct the situation

Sure. And I would like to see it here, on GOG.
In my opinion it is very distasteful to attack sovereign countries. But to each his own.

Hah, didn't notice that. Just wait till you get me on fortnights!
The Longest Journey: There is an established order which has been in place for thousands of years, called the Balance, and you could call it a government that essentially decides on the fates of two worlds all at once. Opposed to them is the evil Vanguard, who by all means are "rebels", yet to my knowledge not called such in the game.

I agree. For example the Russian invasion of the Krim was very distasteful...

But for the civil war in Syria, I don't think that any of the fighting factions are 'the good guys'. A government that oppresses it's own people (including killing them) is evil. Rebels that bomb civilians just to make a post are nothing but terrorists. People like the IS who kill in the name of some deity are also evil, no matter what name that deity bears. Big foreign governments who prolong the war for profit or political gain are evil too, no matter whether they sell weapons to the warring factions or whether they block the UN from helping and intervening to end the war. And a neighboring nation that uses the chaos to invade is definitely evil too. I guess most of the civil, decent Syrian foks who don't want to kill anybody are either in Europe by now or are the ones currently being killed in Syria. Therefore I DO think that making a game about that is distasteful and I hope that GOG doesn't stoop so low as to sell it here. That game is much better at home at Steam, since Steam is evil too! (although on a much smaller scale)

Don't... just don't. It's so not worth it. The guy eats chipped Kremlin propaganda for breakfast, lunch and dinner. His only sustenance is the outrage he creates by regurgitating this argumentative excrement. We're never getting this thread on any kind of sensible track if people keep responding to the provocation. Report to support, then forget.

I assume you mean the Clone Wars, with Republic fighting the Separatists, like in Republic Commando?

I guess? Like I said I'm not good with Star Wars lore at all. But this would fit the description of the rebels being the bad guys in a game then, right? In Republic Commando you fight for the ruling government as the good guys?
