Future Shop? That sounds so Hong Kong to me. And on the subject of carpktshka, tame it down, GOG, please. I realize it has to do with me auto-clearing cookies, but this is the only site I'm sometimes forced to pick buses or sidewalks or traffic lights or hydrants or cars or bikes or hills ... for minutes on end until being allowed into my account.
It's weird people complain about captcha, I've never had to use it once on GOG. Maybe it depends on your country or ISP or something.
This is what I like to call a "little bitch thread". It's always started by some nobody with no history on the forums or shop whining and blaming GOG for something that was their own damn fault, they never respond to us, and their English is always bad enough that there are doubts any of it is even real. It's like they're payed by competitors to make low-effort digs at GOG's reputation.

neumi5694: For the same reason you delete your cookies. THey are security-conscious :)
They can't know if some nicaraguan hacker wrote a bot that hijacked your internet provider and is using your IP to fool their server.
CAPTCHAs *may* be justifiable as a means of preventing bots/spammers from submitting false data to forms on web pages.

However GOG have security checks (requiring you to allow cookies and Javascript - and possibly triggering a CAPTCHA) on all their support pages, regardless of whether there is a form to fill or whether you are logged in to your GOG account . Given that people may be trying to view support pages due to, say, a problem logging in to their GOG account, this is both excessive and counter-productive.

WinterSnowfall: The TLDR of it is: cookies are (often times) evil. In case you want to know more, the EFF is a good place to learn why they are not good for you and should be avoided if possible...
A good link and useful information. The biggest problem IMHO though is with third party scripting that GOG (and plenty of other sites) use, which allows those parties to build up online profiles of site visitors (Google being the biggest example with Google Analytics, Google APIs, Google Fonts, Google Tag Manager, Google Maps, etc plus embedded YouTube videos and Google Ads/Doubleclick advertising all feeding their information collection - easily linked to any searches you have made using Google itself).

Case in point, here's a list of the third party content used by this support page (courtesy of the eMatrix browser plugin).

Heinz68: I bought the Witcher 3 [the] first day it was released. It has worked flawlessly except for GOG bs. This last time was it! Tried to fire it up a minute ago and I get a message that I don't have a valid copy!
According to PCGamingWiki, which is a great site for checking if a specific version of a game has DRM, needs a patch and/or something else - the initial retail version of The Witcher 3 requires a launch file. This requirement was removed from later retail releases and for people that have the initial retail version, there's a launch file patch.

You can download this from the witcher website: http://play.thewitcher.com/

EverNightX: How does clearing cookies after you are done browsing help you? Would you not at a minimum need to clear cookies in between each new site visit?

If you want to have a chance to avoid profiling you mustn't keep any kind of persistent state around in your browser if it can be avoided. A reasonable balance between functionality and privacy is to clear cookies on exit, although I know people who block them outright - but that has the potential to break a website, so I prefer not to.

EverNightX: I believe you are not accomplishing what you think you are.

WinterSnowfall: And I "believe" I am a programmer with both web backend and frontend (though to a lesser degree) experience, that has worked with cookies quite intimately... :).

avatar
EverNightX: What are these other sites you speak of that have a digital library of your purchases? Because in my experience they often require validation of some kind via email or phone which is even more annoying.
avatar
WinterSnowfall: I frequent plenty of sites storing my card data without employing mandatory 2FA (not e-banking sites, mind you... that would indeed be bad). But among the sites that don't persistently believe I am a bot, I can mention: two cloud service providers, at least one online electronics/electric hardware shop, Humble Bundle, Itch.io and Amazon.de. I'm not too concerned about potential hijacks because I know my email is secure and I can block the card I'm using on those sites (and GOG as well for that matter) with the click of a button.

P.S.: Fun fact, I have 2FA enabled on GOG, but still get CAPTCHAs :).
Another clearing cookies follower here
But I am affraid thats just a step to avoid tracking and profiling
With jscript, 3rd party sites, web fonts... hell, even our window size and browser settings
the more obscure, the more can help to deduct its -you- -that- anonymous visitor...
And because sometimes a picture says more than words... (attached)

About captchas, I have a theory and mind you have the skills:
Failed user login attempts elsewhere (you know what I mean)
and obviously GOG is not going to declare anything about it (for reasons)
Thats why only some users have this 2FA/captchas HELL and others not at all

You might prosecute some reasoned testing to shine some light on the issue
because is not a normal thing

And to don't leave this post with just paranoid theories,
please let me share some knowledge I learned from Epic
when claiming the weekly vgames:
Crosswalks and traffic lights love the full straight vertical/horizontal line(s) answers
Dont be picky leaving a square out in those lines
because you dont see them as part of the answer
No kidding!
Hydrants: love rectangles with squares of significant matter,
squares with small portions can be omitted
to avoid making the rectangle unnecessarily bigger

I hope those tips help you to get easy passes going forward, you human! :)
If not, I could share some cursing/bad language in Spanish
to vent at max the frustration everytime...
Its really infuriating to prove being a human when they act dumb! :@

I see you made edited before GOG can see you calling someone American with a homofobico slur. Now you're attacking people for believing in Jesus and being American? You're coming off little unhinged right now.

Indeed. My hope is that Privacy Badger blocks enough of all that "big tech" profiling, or better said blurs enough of it. Using NoScript is the only way to be "mostly invisible", but unfortunately (or maybe also fortunately? :P) it's not 1990 any more and disabling scripting will break almost any website out there.

P.S.: I avoid using Google anyway, and stick to the Duck 99% of times ;).

tag+: Failed user login attempts elsewhere (you know what I mean)
I doesn't even need to be "elsewhere" :P. Someone may be trying to brute-force login into my account for all I know. In that case I wish him good luck for the next millennia or so :).

But even if that were the case, only IP addresses with unsuccessful logins should get the CAPTCHAs... there are ways to be both secure and user friendly. GOG's logging system is hardly ideal, but meh... not a deal-breaker anyway, but I do tend to just avoid logging into GOG when I'm in a hurry these days. Maybe buy stuff over the weekend after chasing fire hydrants, instead of when things launch.

In their defense, this is certainly the right thread to be unhinged on :P.

Tried to fire it up a minute ago and I get a message that I don't have a valid copy! Yes there is a work around but I don't give a damn. You buy games for entertainment not for having to do work and GOG has the most terrible cluttered system ever. From this day forward I will never buy a game that is connected to gog in anyway. It took me 5 minutes just to get through captcha after 20 screens of pick a crosswalk! What a joke! Too pissed off right now to even play a game, good job GOG! Way to set the mood, never again.
Contact GOG support for issues like that. About all you'll get here in the forums is people that can't help, and people blaming and shaming the victim. Go directly to support, the people who can potentially do something about it.
