Hi, is the GOG connect feature discontinued? I havent seen anything going on there in a long time, and whenever there has been something it has been about one single game that just released or something.

Personally i have a huge steam library, i wanted to move over to GOG more and more but this is hindering me. I know about GOG galaxy of course but one of the reasons i want to move over to GOG is the ability to download and play singleplayer games without a client, achievements, social stuff etc.

Either way it would just be nice to get some info on this, if we can expect more games to come to GOG connect or not, so you dont have to go and look all the time to see if there is anything there. Thanks.

Edit: If its gonna be continued it would be nice if they added a wishlist for games the community wants to come to GOG connect.

It still exists, it's just they need approval of the developers/publishers of the games to include them and I guess most don't want to give there games away for free.

According to staff, they have no plans to use it in the future.
It probably wasn't helping gog get as many sales as they expected.

That said, there was that problem when they made Stellaris available in Connect where a lot of people who didn't have it on Steam were able to get it through connect, supposedly because of because of a free weekend the game had on Steam.

So I guess that would be an extra motive to not risk it again.

Never heard about that, but I would say that's entirely publisher's own fault. They should know all ongoing promotions on different platforms, GOG doesn't need to. So if they OK'd free weekend on Steam and GOG Connect at the same time not realising what it will cause, that's a problem they created for themselves.

Theoretically, GOG could change the concept of GOG Connect slightly to avoid such incidents in the future. They could say, like two weeks in advance, that a Connect promo is coming and tell everyone to have a snapshot of their Steam accounts scanned by GOG Connect.
Then two weeks later, whatever games were found and are on the promo can be redeemed, anything activated later on Steam, can't be. One problem solved.

Oh, no, the free weekend didn't happen at the same time. It was a few weeks earlier, I think. Back then, I saw someone theorizing that the free weekend was the cause. But I don't think anyone confirmed it publicly. Besides, I was one who could get the game, but I didn't even play it during the free weekend. (I actually haven't played it at all so far).

I don't mean to sound antagonistic but do you think you should be rewarded by GOG for accumulating a huge Steam library? Does any other business work like this; can I get a free order of fries at my local restaurant if I show a receipt that I bought fries from McDonald's yesterday? I would say customers at Steam are already catered to plenty in gaming, even aside from the ill-fated GOG Connect program.

Assumedly, the point of the GOG Connect program was to get Steam users onto GOG, in order to eventually purchase on GOG. If generally speaking the Steam users only claimed the freebies and didn't actually have enough interest in buying on GOG, what is GOG getting out of that other than some new accounts on their rolls? The best way to move over to GOG is to start buying on GOG until you have the huge library you want on GOG.

In fact, given your stated preference of singleplayer games without a client/achievements/social features, I would even advise to start buying on GOG sooner rather than later, as GOG seems to be "full steam (heh) ahead" with Galaxy, to the point that cosmetic content in the flagship game Cyberpunk is locked behind Galaxy DRM, and so much resources are going in to Galaxy 2.0, which via an app apparently will also sell DRMed games.

Offline installers of DRM-free big releases are definitely the selling point of GOG. Sadly I cannot feel I trust GOG at their word that they will always carry these, so my advice to anyone is buy them while we still can.
It's still there but with no vital signs, so it's a zombie.
Hang on, I just need to reset my clock ... it is a bit out since the last thread like this.

Connect is not dead ... it is just pining.

GOG have no immediate intent for it, but are still hanging onto it, in case things change, and they can then breathe life back into it ... reanimate the GOG eyed zombie.
GOG wasn't getting anything out of that program, so hopefully it stays dead. I mean, if you constantly get free GOG copies through Connect what reason do you have to stop buying from Steam?

There's already plenty of good reasons to stop buying on Steam, and move over to GOG already.

How about the fact that Steam is a rental service (Valve has straight up said this)? How about DRM-free games? Off-line installers? An optional client in Galaxy with cloud save, achievements, etc? How about "ownership" and control of what you buy?

The longer you wait, and the more titles you rent on Steam will just make it harder for you. Steam is a garbage service, and a bad store for a variety of reasons.

Also, nowhere does it say you can't buy on multiple stores either. You can still always buy those anti-consumer DRM heavy games on Steam still if you really want some of them. You can make your own decisions, but the way I would suggest to people is if something is available on GOG you should always buy it here. There's absolutely no reason why you should be "buying" something on Steam when it's also available on GOG. GOG isn't a rental service like Steam is, so why would you want to have everything on a rental service when you actually "own" and have full control of the software you just bought on GOG?

Personally, I've found that I have so many great titles available on GOG that I don't need Steam anymore. I don't miss those anti-consumer DRM games at all, and it's like they kind of don't even exist to me anymore. But again, you can still always show up on Steam for the random DRM heavy game you might really want.
If it attracted people that would spend money here, I'm sure GOG would use Connect more often. Why should GOG keep spending money to give free copies of games to deadbeats?

Actually there are several examples of such promotions where you bring an older product of another manufacturer and get a good discount on a competing product. In some cases they don't even want the entire old product, just some parts of them, or manual, etc.

I don't think restaurants work that way though. The closest example that I can think of is a promotion by Lidl, where they gave a "bonus discount" when you showed a bonus card of any other business or shop at the cash register.
