Timboli: In reality that is unknown, and Steam don't really have a say. It is all about a user's settings at Steam ... the user giving permission to share, which happens with GOG and many others, so not a GOG only thing or deal with Steam. GOG just take advantage of what Steam provide. A Steam User gives permission at Steam for their library details to be shared with a site (GOG or some other site).

As has been stated, it is all about a DEV/PUB agreeing. It doesn't happen without them.
Whether GOG compensate them or not I have no idea, but I suspect not ... or we would surely have seen more.

If GOG are compensating the DEV/PUB then they are doing the wrong thing. The DEV/PUB have already been paid ... it is a known fact ... unless of course the user got the game free at Steam ... but did Steam already compensate them.
I'm certain that GOG had to pay for the free copies granted here. That's what got devs/pubs to agree to begin with. It was a doomed program from the start. "If you have a few specific games on Steam, get them free here within a 2 week window. Maybe you'll actually spend money here!!"

What happened was the people who redeemed the games here either were already customers and were spending what they'll spend (probably a majority of the cases) or were not interested in spending money here and redeemed the free game without any follow-up interaction.

The system was POORLY marketed, barely thought out, and incompetently executed. The hallmarks of GOG.

This is the best summary of GOG Connect I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Props.

You may well be right, especially if they were silly enough to pay the DEVs/PUBs.

The way I see it though, it says a lot about all those DEVs/PUBs that weren't taking advantage of GOG Connect ... tells you what they really care about, where their ethics lie. Unhappily, that seems all of them, though maybe the PUBs are the actual culprit, rather than the DEVs, unless they are one and the same.

Ironically, I have bought quite a few DRM-Free games at Humble (either because they weren't at GOG or in some cases were cheaper than they have ever been at GOG) and was given a Steam Key as well for most of them. And I could have gifted the Steam Key to someone else. Talk about a better reverse version of GOG Connect ... shall we call it Humble Connect ... though there is no connecting ... just a key.

I think the biggest problem with connect is it was only really ever advertised here on GOG (and on their twitter/FB) to those who already follow or use GOG. It also never had a few standing games always available (like Witcher series just for example) to entice people to come in and use it. It seemed more like a novelty that was never going to have the effect of increasing business like they hoped it would.

The ONE place they really needed to find a way to advertise it was on Steam, on the game pages of the games that were available. And they never did.

I'm not sure about the relevancy of the Witcher series, as from what I have heard, if you bought elsewhere you also got a GOG code for the game. But don't quote me on that ... just what I recall reading. If that is the case, then there would be no-one to claim.

Maybe they just couldn't.

I would think the GOG Connect thing would advertise itself soon enough. What they really want, is DEVs/PUBs coming onboard without being compensated by GOG. There would be plenty of old and new customers out there, waiting to take advantage ... just look at how often this type of thread appears.

The thread/comments about GOG Connect appear quite often. What hasn't materialized is the great mass of Scheme users who would not only take advantage of the freebie but also stick around to actually buy games here let alone over the long term. Some folks will even take the time to complain in the forum about how X game "should" be on GOG Connect, rather than buying games here.

Anecdotal, but is there anyone on these forums who came over from Scheme, took advantage of GOG Connect, and liked what they saw on GOG enough to stick around and buy games here?

Or we misunderstood its main purpose - to easily acquire a user game base and keep abreast of those changes. I think that It has succeeded :-)
