Catventurer: I'm sure that other people would appreciate having the option to increase the font size on the forum.
While they get that implemented (let's not hold our breath...), you can use something like this:

javascript:(function(){document.querySelectorAll('.post_text_c, .quot_text').forEach(function(el){el.style.fontSize='medium';});})();

Just paste it in the URL bar and save it as a bookmark if you want.

solseb: Would you prefer to have it visible who, nickname under post, clicked at high rated green + button in each post?
Or rather have it anonymous, like it is now? and why.

I wish it was open and visible to all those who clicked "like" like on most forums.

Not in.

As for the question: anonymous.

There is so much on GOG that would urgently need improvement, but the responsible staffers can't keep up already - and you want them to waste time on a project that would serve no other purpose, than to feed into some people's vanity?

A genuine question: what would you gain from knowing, who upvoted your posts?

Not in, there are barely a couple of games that I might be interested in among the top 100 rated as shown now, and none from my wishlist. Plus that the vast majority of those on the first page of that list seem to be really niche titles that likely just had a few votes from fans. I'd probably eliminate all those with a perfect 5.0 rating, but even so, after the first ones with 4.9, Deus Ex, Quest for Glory collection and Thief 2, you'd probably need to skip to Witcher 3 at the end of the first page for games with mass appeal, and then go from there, at least the first half of page 2 being, in full, a clear list of justifiably top rated games.

Anyway, about your question, when low rating was also possible, that definitely should have revealed who clicked that button. About upvotes, on the other hand, I have no strong opinion either way, but do generally tend to advocate for people owning up to their actions and opinions, so for that alone I'd support making it public. But no problem with keeping it as it is either.

Edit: Proper link to the catalog sorted by ratings.

solseb: time as good as any other to ask you for a way to look at it

One high-rated game will be randomly picked for a randomly chosen person answering a question about our forum:

Would you prefer to have it visible who, nickname under post, clicked at high rated green + button in each post?
Or rather have it anonymous, like it is now? and why.

My opinion does not participate in a draw, but I wish it was open and visible to all those who clicked "like" like on most forums.
If you feel it's not important or have a completely different vision, please write about it too.

this giveaway ends 20th December '24 at noon UTC,
The draw will be taken out of the first 100 highest-rated games and recorded,
should you win an unacceptable game we will spin for another one or again one more time.

I would be equally comfortable having my likes (high-rating) be publically visible (at least so far it has been so), and I have been happy to participate in forums where likes are public. But that said, I understand for some difficult topics public visibility could prevent people from liking them. So overall, I prefer having anonymous likes to still be possible.

Besides, publically showing one's approval is already possible by replying to a post ("Hear hear" or something like that), even though it is somewhat inconvenient for large amounts of replies.

Perhaps it could be possible to have both options (anonymous and public upvoting) available?

[Edit] Forgot to add, I am in for the giveaway.

How would you implement this?

Would you do a join to the user table for each post? (would slow the forums down massively)

Or would you store all the users who liked the post in the post entry itself? (would slow the forums down moderately)

I'd rather keep it anonymous, like how it is now.
There's not really any reason for names to be listed, it will probably mess something technical up (you'd need to implement a system that not only displays but also records names for each user) and it might actually result in more hostility.

Let's say there's a controversial topic on the forums and a post gets a lot of high ratings on it. With such a system detractors of that post can now see who's in favor of it, which may result in hostility. So keep it simple and keep it anonymous.

I'd rather have it anonymous. Some people would prefer to have their username hidden when upvoting a post with a controversial opinion, and the same goes to downvoting.

(I'm in)

Just as Azrastrelcy above me said.
Anonymously, because of the flak you'll get from others when you support someone with an alternative opinion over a contentious issue.

The system is also sorta too broken as it is now to start putting all those changes in place anyway. For instance, we still cannot "undo" an accidental upvote.

If GOG sunsets this forum and builds another from scratch, maybe we can toy around with new approaches. Maybe. But right now, no - anonymously like it's always been.

gogtrial34987: However, when it is visible, some valued community participants can become known for their thumbing-style, ranging from "I thumb everything I've seen" to "I thumb maybe one thing a month", with the latter then becoming a badge of honor in itself. This can be fun in tight-knit communities.

On small forums, where you know most everybody, it's nice to have them named ("Clementine likes this post and will remember it"). But on a large forum, like GOG's, where most everyone is essentially anonymous, it too should remain anonymous, in my opinion, otherwise it is sure to cause trouble.

I prefer for it to be anonymous. I don't think seeing exactly who liked your post will lead to a more harmonious community. It's too easy to focus on how many likes you got and who agreed with you versus the other person, rather than the contents of your post or the engagement you received.

I'm in!
Since only likes are allowed now, it would be probably ok to show the users who appreaciated a post.
Even if controversial ones could still cause a ruckus.
Frankly, it doesn't seem a fundamental feature atm.

The decision to keep upvotes anonymous has by and large led to less accusations of bandwagoning (at least I think so).

+1 for the GA

Just wanted to clarify that I'm in for your giveaway. I noticed I forgot to mention that in my previous post.

I dont mind the idea of implementing the ability to see who liked your post and making it visible to the public but the forum itself needs some improvements. Also think this is something that should be restricted to each game forum rather than the public forum for more closeness although the issue is there isnt enough activity on each game sub to warrant such a feature.

I have seen this work on other forums but those are more niche fan sites than gaming in general.

I suppose the benefit would be it may make connections between users easier since users can see who liked their posts (although in that case, you would need more reactions than just "like" or "upvote"). There may be issues of privacy though since avatars reveal info like the location of the user and bogging down the forum even more when the forums themselves still need improvement.

Having no quick reply feature, ability to reply to several posts in one post, and having a pop up that takes several minutes to ensure that the response is posted (if at all) are more important issues that need to be addressed for the forum. As well as honestly allow users/GOG customers to be able to post fan-made content to add more activity/content to the forum (FAQs, walkthroughs, challenges, videos, screenshots, etc.).
