So I bought Doom 1 GOG version and of course since this is the original DOS version the controls are kinda crappy.

Doom is the kind of game that NEEDs that WASD+Mouse combo.

Using the Arrow keys and SPACE,ATL,CTRL as your move,shoot, and interact controls

Normally I would just ask how to make the controls like WASD+MOUSE but after seeing the Brutal Doom mod why do I need to play the vanilla version.

So how does modding this game work?

I would hate doom in WASD + mouse setup. Tried the first dark forces like that once, absolutely hated it.

Definitely not at all what I was used to when playing those games originally, and dark forces was set up like that by default on steam so it was all kinds of a clusterf*** when I was expecting the original setup.

Well, to be fair, because games like Doom didn't had mouselook, hitboxes were pretty generous so you could shoot anywhere in the vicinity of the enemies :D. So mouselook is almost like cheating.

TRIED and ONCE says enough there. You obviously did not give it enough of a chance if you only tried it once.

and the original key board controls are? They were awful back then never mind now! Not adjusting due to nostalgia is just silly. Take the latest System Shock release for example. That game plays waaaay smoother with WASD and mouse look. But it got so many complaints because it isn't the "proper" experience.
