I just finished rewatching his Ultima Retrospective. Great stuff, funny and informative, it takes you on a journey through two decades of PC gaming, and a very personal journey of one gamer who grew up playing those games. Probably the best thing I've seen from any "youtuber" or "internet reviewer". It really is a pity Spoony no longer makes any reviews. I know it may sound silly, but I really loved those videos, and they were quite an influence on me. Sometimes they really were an inspiration. He was at his best when he reviewd stuff he really cared about- Final Fantasy VIII, Highlander, Ultima. There was something contagious about that passion for all this nerdy stuff, even when he hated what he was reviewing you could tell he hates it and mocks it because he cares.

I guess it was inevitable that he would run out of steam eventually. I always knew The Spoony Experiment can't last forever. But I always thought there will be one more year. And one more. Alas, all good things must come to an end.

I know there is much bitterness among some of his fans, about how he promised to do so much more and never go around to it, about wasting his time on social media, about his Patreon, and I don't necessarily disagree, but right now I don't want to hate the guy and pick apart wherever he went wrong. I want to remember all the great fun I had watching his videos.

So if anyone else misses the good old Spoony Experiment- come, share some good memories.

Just don't tell me I'm standing in your way. Seriously, I will punch you in the soul.

He's more interested in showing comic book images in twitter and WWE it seems.

I blame his Amazing Spiderman 2 review. He bash that movie to Kingdom Come and spawned hate comments from people who geniunely liked that piece of trash of a movie.

The backlash was so bad it made Spoony shut off comment sectons from his youtube channel and website.

I liked his early stuff. When the focus shifted more towards comic book related stuff and wrestling, I gradually stopped following his updates. He was initially labeled as one of those "AVGN ripoffs" back when that used to be a fad (2007-08ish?), but soon developed his own style and stood out from the crowd with his in-depth, well-written material. I guess things started going downhill when he decided to associate with the Channel Awesome label and appearing in their "movies".

Nothing against him or his associates, just not my cup of tea.

I never understood that claim from many of his fans. I mean, it really had no negative impact on his own work. Quite the contrary, that's when he made the Highlander and FF X reviews and most of the Ultima Retrospective, some of his best work. And personally I found the anniversary "movies" rather fun, especially Spoony's part in them (even despite not knowing most of the other people).
Lol, I've just re-watched his FFXIII videos instead.
I didn't know that he stopped making reviews :\
Also, why is he reuploading old stuff?

The way I remember it (I haven't watched any of his stuff in years), is that there seemed to be an overly gratuitous amount of self-references and crossovers between his stuff and other people from under the Channel Awesome umbrella. It got a bit tiresome and distracting - like there was less focus on the reviews themselves, but it was more important that his stuff was fitting into some larger "story-line" or whatever.

Blip, where most of his stuff was, went down some time ago, so he's been moving things back to YT. Also, YT is crazy with blocking almost everything because of copyright issues, real and imagined, so he had to re-edit and upload some old stuff. He had to remove or replace a lot of music in the Ultima series for example.
i liked his lets play swat 4 videos more than ultima one of the best lets plays i have seen

Possibly the only Let's Play I have ever enjoyed. Well that and his Phantasmagoria II.

Has Spoony officially stopped making game reviews, then? I can't find any official announcement he's made about it, but looking through his social media stuff is a bit of a 'needle in a haystack' situation. If he has, then it's a real pity; I've enjoyed his reviews over the years and his work introduced me to older stuff like Ultima and Wing Commander, even if I was always more a fan of his Counter Monkey show. Heck, I don't even watch WWE and yet I still listen to his VLogs on it.

Sadly with Blip shutting down I think the format of TSE, like a lot of Channel Awesome style reviews is on its way out - there's just so many ways for copyright holders and bots to take stuff down on Youtube that editing the gags is a nightmare, and no other video platform has the audience to support them.
Has he officially retired or is it just the usual release cycle of one video every hundred years? Spoony has always been slow on output, it took him over two years to finish the Final Fantasy VII review. The same with Ultima.

Now that he has a Patreon he gets over 3,000$ per month (minus fees and taxes), so why would he even bother trying harder?

I don't think there was anything official, but it was some 8 months since his last proper TSE episode, so I think it's safe to assume that ship has sailed.

Well, you're in luck- he is still making Counter Monkeys, or at least was very recently. I don't like them quite as much as his proper reviews, but they can be fun too, and they did get me back into tabletop RPGs. And helped me a lot in running my own campaigns.

I've seen Nostalgia Critic experimenting with reviews without any clips or copyrighted material, but frankly they were rather awful. Then again, I think almost everything he and Channel Awesome did since the "Death and Return of the Nostalgia Critic" is pretty awful.

regardless of that, it's true that the copyright witchhunt on YT is a big problem for anyone doing this type of thing, and I can see how sticking to Counter Monkeys might be a safer bet than working hard for days on something that will end up being banned anyway.

His Ultima retrospective....classic. He may eventually go back to gaming reviews.
I really liked the Final Fantasy videos he made and the ones about Phantasmagoria 2. I also like some of his straight up reviews and commentary but it has been a while since I sat down to watch through the things Noah put out.

I'm hoping he'll get back to making more of those type of videos soon enough.

I wish he still made Let's Play like those. He streams quite a lot right now, but it's all really boring and unfunny. I wish he'd pick up a bunch of old adventure games on GOG and riff on them like he did with Phantasmagoria.
