Its late night and im thinking about this.
Comparing the relatively free forums of Steam, to the strict iron fist moderation of GoG.
Which one is better?

This post is supposed to be an open question, not an answer.

Do i prefer the freedom of speech on Steam? Or the censorship on GoG?

Do i prefer talking about the weather and what music i listen to on GoG, or talking about hot issues on Steam?

On GoG everything that falls outside of the weather and music i listen to, gets deleted. Is this OK?

Does deleting a thread make the problem go away?
Does not openly asking a question make the question go away from our minds?

Makes me think of "We Happy Few"
A world where everybody is either happy with the staus quo or an outcast

Well, every company has a different way of moderating their forum. Personally I prefer as open and free as possible, if you aren't spamming/advertising or harrassing a member, say whatever you please.

True, and GoGs moderation is very similar to EA/Bioware, with not surprisingly similar results, namely benign weather-like conversations, where all the posts are just the kind of stuff you would find in old age asylum conversations.

Edit: my post was not intended to troll, im expecting replies with opinions about what people think about this kind of censorship, if it is ok why, if it is wrong why.

I have no problem with a mod deleting a thread BUT I don't like the power of the spoil fun gang in here that spam and delete a thread or post. That is plain, uncontrolled ABUSE.
Oh,did I say watch this space.

It's just the way GOG operates - even their community forums are curated.

Um hmm, and the abuse is only possible because of the thread deleting policy.
If the moderators would simply give a warning and then lock a thread instead of just deleting it, things would be different i think.
I'd also rather have a free forum. i don't really remember the topics of the deleted forums, other than lepereux. He seemed to be an extreme example of a hate poster. I don't mind differing opnions, but sometimes they are just instigating a fight.

Fortunately this is all text based so i can just not read em, but i'd like ge option to read some bs instead of having them deleted.

Freedom of speech on Steam. LOL. Just try to mention DRM free and see how quickly you get labeled as a dirty pirate and possibly even banned.

Yeah, if i dont like a topic, i will simply start posting abuse in that thread and the moderators will promptly delete the thread.
This is idiotic and an invitation to abuse.
Dont like a thread? Want it deleted?
No problem, just post some smack in the thread, problem solved.

Nope, wrong. It is the USERS that down vote then hit the report as spam button until a few have attacked and the post/thread is then deleted. That is the ABUSE and misuse for that purpose.

I wouldn't exactly call Steam forums "freedom of speech". It you want to hurl petty insults at each other or write stupid uselss one-liner reviews like "it sux", then sure, but if you want to ask developers a "difficult" question or talk about DRM, intelligent honest debate is the last thing you'll get over there and the thread will be closed (by the game's developers rather than Steam) or swamped with trolls in 5 seconds flat...

GOG's real problem is inconsistency. Personally I have zero problem if a store-front wants to steer clear of politics and enforce that to not be sucked into "GG vs SJW" stuff, but that requires their staff that deal with marketing tweets and community forum managers to "be on the same page", ie no politics = no political tweets that inevitably cause people to want to discuss GOG's tweets in GOG's forums...

Yes i know hehe. Had a post deleted for posting a link to a GoG special sale featuring Kingdom Come" Deliverance, and got a warning too.
At the very least they had a point, i was advertising GoG on the Steam forums.
How far would you suggest the moderation be pushed back to?
There is the risk that the forum will devolve if moderation is too lenient.

Yes maybe so, but if GoG moderators would not fall for these tactics so easily, then the abuse would not be possible.
Abuse is only possible when the owners of the forums make it possible.
I think GOG's forum policy is quite sensible. No politics, no swearing. That for me is enough freedom. I'm here to talk about games and nobody stops me about writing basically anything related to games.
