97,5% sure that's not it, but i will try.

I played this game on PS1. It's also on PC, you can get it here on GOG. Disney's Hercules action game. In the first scene, the main antagonist Hades converses with the 3 moirai (goddesses of fate). He places down a small figurine, resembling young Hercules.

Again, 97,5% sure that's not it, since you recall all the characters were male.

Look up the gameplay on Youtube.

EDIT: such a dumbass of me. These are 2D graphics. But you did say any help was appreciated.

Your description sounds familiar. It should be Sanitarium you are looking for.

There is a scene you have to move across a chess board. By far the worst riddle in an otherwise fantastic game.

Tex Murphy: Overseer could fit close - there are two male characters at the end (main protagonist and antagonist) and a chess board.

However, the game doesn't have any fantasy stuff (Deities/Death/etc.) and you are involved in a chess puzzle. Also, it's a point & click adventure, not a Hack and Slash RPG.

Your descriptions are far too vague. It's chess, but maybe it's not chess, I'm guessing not. It's maybe deities.. Ok.. Pawn? If it's not chess then it's not a pawn. These all detract from each other, they are too little detail to search. Not to mention it's a solitary cutscene which further reduces the chance you'll find it based on that description.

You should focus on other things to describe the game, maybe something that was said, or some name, some boss. You said it's a hack and slash, so what was the combat like, any abilities you remember. For example, you could describe Diablo with stuff like this, vague stuff. But if you remember "stay a while and listen" you'd find the game easily.

As I read your descriptions, the game Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor comes to mind. I think the opening/intro cutscene is the wizard Elminster and someone else playing a dice game or something with a checkered board. I can still hear "Let us begin..." from one of them. Anyhow, it's an RPG from around that time window. If that's not it, sorry. Good luck.

I could swear that this motive from intro is extremely familiar for me, but don't remember exactly where it came from.

But the whole narration about fate being in someone else hands and being a pawn on the board is extremely similar to game called "Sacrifice" and its narration. It's probably not that game, but the motive is very close.
