Come to think of it, Fallout 3 probably introduced a whole generation to RPGs. That might be an option.

If you don't want to read a book in the game, Planescape: Torment probably really isn't a good choice. It's the writing that makes that one (and literally a fan-made book made straight from it... or a couple of them, actually). Still consider this (spoiler warning and all) as probably the best priece of writing in a game.

Lucumo: Battle for Wesnoth is still relevant? Nice. I played that game with my friends back in 2006.

Can't really help you with much as I've played more SRPGs on consoles than PC. And since you don't really care about anime, most of the PC stuff like Farland Symphony and consoles like Super Robot Taisen aren't relevant. Heck, basically all Japanese SRPGs/TRPGs are anime: Fire Emblem (the new entries suck though), the ...Wars series, Disgaea series, Front Mission series, Shining series, Phantom Brave etc etc.
I would go with something like King's Bounty, as was mentioned by Cavalary. Legend of Eisenwald I have actually played and I don't think it's a good game. It was some major issues which makes it "ok". Apart from that, maybe try something like the Banner Saga or the Shadowrun games? Haven't played any of those though.
Given the sales on here, DIABLO is still relevant and that was a game I enjoyed on my mom's computer back in 1996.

And Diablo, a commercial game, released by one of the most famous gaming companies ever, which also started a new genre and was wildly copied (including an even more successful sequel) is totally comparable to a freeware game from 2003...

To be fair, they weren't famous before Diablo.
Since you are low on budget ...would you be interested in Aven colony and Stellaris ?
Just asking ,since I have a spare key of those 2. GOG keys please.

But yeah granted it's totally out of topic ...

EDIT : made a specified topic on the matter(in the french forum) and the key found someone.

Lucumo: Can non-Steam and Steam players even play together then?

If you want to play something from Japan, then you don't really have a choice in that matter. Western and Japanese SRPGs/TRPGs are definitely different, much like JRPGs and WRPGs. But I guess some games are more "anime" than others, if we aren't just talking about the visual style.
I believe so, since you have to register on the BfW website and use those credentials to connect to official server.
Want to thank all for the great input.

Got Dex per Themken "recomendation", it seems to have a little of spelunky/dead cells feel wich I am more familiar with.
Bought King's Bounty: The Legend as well as it as quite cheap and many people recomended this game series as a good entry title.

I will try HoMaM3 today, since I bought it a couple of months ago.
Will keep an eye on this thread for future reference :D
