iofhua: System Shock 2 Reviews are being manipulated
By you apparently. :/
avatar
iofhua: I have been going through the reviews on System Shock 2 and down-voting positive reviews and looking for negative reviews to up-vote.
For someone who claims to have been gaming for a long time, you sure are being childish. The 'downvoting' and 'upvoting' of reviews is effectively a rating of the review. So you're giving bad ratings to reviews that liked the game because you consider their opinion invalid rather than because they're particularly bad reviews.
avatar
iofhua: I didn't start this thread to post my review - I started this thread to question why the reviews seem to be manipulated. Why can't I vote on the reviews I want?
Has it occurred to you that it might be because of your abuse of the voting system?

You're a great person.

rampancy: I'm highly amused. The OP is trying to manipulate user reviews to suit his own personal subjective preferences, and then goes to accuse GOG of manipulating user reviews to suit their own personal subjective preferences.

odinfan: Let's not get ahead of ourselves here now. I personally don't agree with the OP, but there have been countless games that have had universal appraise that I'd dislike myself. The Last of Us being one prime example (and in turn of which I praise DX and SS2 for the same reason, or similarly the original Fallouts).

rampancy: It's one thing to disagree with majority opinions on a game. For instance, I actually enjoyed my time with Daikatana. And I don't think that Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts is the greatest RPG of all time.

It's another thing entirely to denounce opinions that dissent from your own as being wholly invalid, or interpret anything other than an instantaneous, unconditional validation of your own personal opinion above all others as being a personal attack against you.

Put another way, a game which really irritated me lately is Telepath Tactics, for reasons that I personally feel are poor design choices, that deprived me of any enjoyment of what seemed like a very engaging setting and cast of characters. Do I think the game is bad? Yes, I do. But would I try to downvote every other single positive review, or assume that those positive reviews are fakes posted by sock puppet alts of the dev? Of course not. And I certainly wouldn't assume that it'd impossible for others to consider it a good game based on my opinion. Because there are a lot of others who do think it's a good game, and those people have a different set of expectations and preferences out of a game like TT, than I.
Again, I never said I agreed with the OP, but now we're simply talking about the "degree" of a difference in opinions here. His actions probably aren't wholly justified (and he probably didn't have to make a topic about it), but again, it's his view, which can't be invalidated by ANYONE, whether you or I.
Can't believe the review section needs an instruction sheet.

It's not upvoting or downvoting reviews. The question asked is "Is this helpful to you?" If you read the reviews before purchase and a particular review assists you in making up your mind about buying it (or not buying it), then it's helpful. If it's "Great game - you gotta buy it!" then that's likely considered not particularly helpful.
Who cares about the actual review? It's all about the stars baby!

odinfan: No one has an objective opinion, that's what everyone says.
Of course there is such a thing as objectivity. It means: "(of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts." If you're claiming that you're unable to do this then your entire argument is not only completely unfactual through your own admission (claiming you' have no objectivity), but also a projection of your own limitations onto others. The logic in your post is mostly used by teens that don't know any better.

I'd definitely recommend taking the time to learn about it instead of making things up as you go along. It's silly to take on topics you don't understand at all. :P

That's your fallacy right there. You assume you yourself are making a true statement of objectivity. What I said was "Your statement is opinion", which you can't really dispute because not everyone shares your view. Unless you can somehow prove to me that through OBJECTIVE facts, you really don't have an argument (caps for emphasis, not yelling).

Labeling in this case is important, don't drop words you find inconvenient to use.

Or let me make myself clear. All statements made in this case ARE opinions, WHETHER you think to yourself that they are TRUE or NOT.

Jesus, this feels like I'm reading Umineko again, having to prove something.

And you say you aren't bringing your own feelings into this, but you just did it right there in your last statement (not to dismiss your critique of the OP as well).

I love this thread. It's rare anyone or anything can make me feel smart. :D

If only the world worked on such naive logic, we'd still be in the dark ages perhaps. Thinking that you need to be convinced of something for it to be true is fallacious. It's not a winning/losing thing even though you think it is. I used to be similar to you when I was younger before I learned better. :P

Anyways, if you just have a problem with others pointing out your errors then believe whatever you want. I was just trying to help. :)

Yes, but this isn't Science, its debate. And I think this one should have been black and white from the beginning, no? If one can't probably do that, forums wouldn't exist.
I was on the debate team in high school.

I always wore a mask.

They called me The Masked Debater.

I think everyone here would agree that you are clearly the winner in this discussion. +1

Nah, I stole that from Mick Foley.
