Having thought of this for a while I don't think it will work. Also a strong feeling of deja vu. Haven't we seen this before?
They will destroy Ciri, somehow she's a mutated witcher now. Needs to be, because it's in the title, regardless of how outrageous it is. Furthermore, since she is the titular witcher then Geralt can no longer be, so they will destroy him too. Either drag him in the mud or kill him off, probably both.
Fans of Witcher 3 liked Ciri and Geralt and will hate seeing them treated this way. People who didn't care for Witcher 3 are not likely to care any more for Witcher 4 either. Hence the game will not sell that well. They will respond to bad sales by calling people names, but it won't help. And unlike Cyberpunk, there is no fixing it because it's not just bugs and poor features, it's the story and the characters.
I don't think it will be a catastrophical failure like some recent examples. Most likely something like Alan Wake II; a solid title that still hasn't managed to make any money. I'm not sure if CDPR has the finances to survive that kind of a thing either. If not, GOG will also be gone.
