Dragonslayer (1981) -- IMO one of the best movies ever to come out of Disney

All at Sea is one of those I don't remember at all. I know I read it, but I don't remember anything about it. Asterix and the Falling Sky is where things hit rock bottom. It's the first and only book in the series I remember genuinely disliking. It's some weird meta-comic about an alien invasion, full of refrences to Disney, Superman, current politics, manga and I don't even know what. It was a comlete dumpster fire. But after the new team took over, the books have been quite decent. Not as good as Goscinny's stuff, but good, especially Picts and Chieftan's Daughter.

Yep, a great fantasy film. Disney was great in the 80s, making weird, dark movies rather than the cute musical crap they are known for. The Black Hole, Watcher in the Woods, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, Return to Oz - unlike most people I consider the 80s to be creatively the best period for Disney. Way better movies then they're supposed "renaissance".

Zach Snyder's Justice League

Far better than Whedon's version, many things make sense now, I still think that they should have made origin movies about Flash and Cyborg before going into the JL, but it seems they wanted to speed things up.

It would have been great to see the sequels to this, but I don't think they're going to make them.

Star Trek: First Contact

One of the best Star Trek movies, really did a great job of making the movie feel uncomfortable as the Enterprise is slowly being converted to suit the Borg as the halls of the familiar and safe are distorted into the dark and horror.

Also has a great soundtrack with the main theme moving throughout the entire film.

I actually think this movie works pretty well as an origin story for Cyborg. Seeing how feeling alienated and getting over that is a big part of his arc, I think it works well for a team-up movie. And as a less popular/known character (even I never cared much about him, and I'm a DC fan), it makes some sense to introduce him in Justice League.

Unfortunately it's almost certain they won't. Though I actuall regrett the Batman solo film with Affleck more than the JL sequels. Affleck and Irons are probably my favorite Batman/Alfred duo ever in live action.

I'd also love to see the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad, but that too seems doomed. I don't think the theatrical cut was as bad as most people seem to make it, but I'm still curious.

I didn't have much faith in Affleck at first, but I was greatly suprised with his batman, and of course Jeremy Irons as Alfred is Amazing.

Suicide Squad was ok for me, entertaining enough, although I hated Jared Leto as the Joker, didn't know about the "Ayer Cut", I just hope that the next DC movies don't have all these different versions and they come out as the directors wanted them in the first place

"Only The Brave"

Basically, Warners had the movie changed greatly without the director's input to make it more in line with the trialer that got very popular online, but didn't really represent the movie as it then was at all. So they made it more like it- lighter, more jokes, more pop songs on the soundtrack, supposedly butchered the Joker's involvment in the story etc. The director has since been very vocal about how much he despises the final product and really hoped that the Snyder Cut would mean he too would get the chance to fix his film. But with the new Suicide Squad coming, and clearly aiming at a similiar tone, Warner Bros has no intention to make a competing, serious Suicide Squad too.

So do I. The whole Justice League debacle should teach them that... although giving Patty Jenkins free reign over WW84 didn't turn out so well...

Glad you mentioned the Transformers movies.

I never understood the point of those military guys in Transformers movies. They never really seem to accomplish anything, they just run around, constantly shooting at some big bad Decepticon or whatever the bad Transformers were called, never really damaging them at all even thought they shoot them with like one million rounds.

Maybe one exception, in the first movie when that big aircraft shoots sabot rounds towards one of the robots, making it lose its tail. That short scene was kinda cool. But the rest of the army guys in that scene, WTF were they doing? Why didn't they just realize "Ok, our bullets are apparently completely useless against those robots."?

Maybe it is some deal with the US Army that the US army soldiers must have certain amount of exposure in the movies.

Mortal Kombat (2021), I regret to spend my time with that movie, it's not boring but you won't feel any excitement for it either, you won't feel nothing. Too many characters with zero charisma, irregular special effects, it take itself too seriously to be funny (and it really try to be funny), the editing is mediocre, the combat scenes are regular but it's a marital art movie with a big budget, it could be way better, I mean, The Raid (2011) was made with 1.1M...
The original was way more fun, I recommend to smip this one :/

Mortal Kombat (2021 movie / HBO Max):

Often, great action & great special effects do not & cannot just make for a great film. Neither does having tons of fan service either, as there has to be...something else too. The MK 2021 Movie proves this, like many other game-to-movie translations...that also try to stuff so much plot, story, characters in 2 hours, which just don't work b/c..they are trying to cram too much into one film, so that the results turn out underdeveloped and a not-so-special Greatest Hits event.

Throwing numerous characters, origin stories, and plotlines from all over numerous different entries of the MK series - a series known for tons of Lore, plot, story, and character, by the way - just cannot be done in around 2 hours & squished into one small film, giving this film no real chance to breathe. This B-movie with A-movie production values probably should've probably been made as a longer movie or a Season worth of TV episodes, as all of the important stuff in the MK saga has totally been totally made a mess out of here. There's a reason why books like Game Of Thrones and both books & games like The Witcher were turned into TV series, given the necessary room to breathe & also develop story, plot, characters, and whatnot into something more than just being a Cliff Notes style 2 hour film could ever do, already set-up for failure in its actual attempt.

The 2 hours flew by in this movie namely b/c of its action, but so much of everything else is under-developed & frustrating to watch, done some things so differently, and/or feels like the Cliff Notes version of a 5-10 hour MK game...that the first film here feels like the set-up for a bigger & hopefully better entries into this onslaught of...maybe a trilogy of films here?

Also, this mediocre movie lacks the greatness of the game series and especially the much longer story modes found in MK9 or MK10, in which those make for much better movies/TV shows that are interactive with the trademark & iconic MK-style combat & gameplay.

Seriously, just stick w/ the last few recent MK games; and/or stick w/ the classic MK video games.

Casper (1995)

Yeah no, this is a kids film through and through. I couldn't remember it very well, but hoped that it had been written with some humour appreciable by adults as well.
I want to re-watch Adams Family and Goodman's Flintstones next.

Wolfwalkers - a stunningly beautiful, wonderful film. The animation is spectacular, the music is simply fantastic, and even if some of the plot points are cliched, it's all delivered with so much emotional sincerity, largely thanks to great voice acting, that it's really hard to complain about the predictable message.

And yes, I am writing this because I got pissed off at the predictable Oscar win for Soul, which was a mediocre, bland film. The Oscars never recognise the superb, vastly superior and more artistically ambitious animated films like Wolfwalkers of Kubo and the Two Strings. It's always just accolades for Disney and Pixar for any CGI thing fart out.

Cop Land

Been meaning to watch this one for a while. Even though I hoped for a more sophisticated story, and it seemed a bit disjointed at times, I enjoyed it a great deal. In no small part I believe due to Stallone's portrayal of the 'doormat' sheriff.

If nothing else it really helped to wash the awful taste of 'The Dead Don't Die' out of my mouth.
