I use a pair of V-Moda M-100 headphones on my work laptop.

My gaming laptop has a Creative X-Fi Surround 5.1 which is connected via RCA to a Lepai 2020A mini amp and a pair of old JBL L40 bookshelf speakers. I also use a pair of cheap (but surprisingly good) Behringer HPX2000 headphones on that system.

My HTPC laptop has a Sound Blaster X-Fi HD which is connected via S/PDIF (TOSLINK to coax) to an old Sony STR-DE575 receiver and Sony 5.1 speaker system (centre SS-CN109, towers SS-AV44, satellites SS-SR9, subwoofer SA-WM20).

My living room/guest laptop uses its built-in 5.1 speakers (yeah, it's an oddity which also features an 18.4" display).

The two spare laptops use their crappy stereo speakers, but mostly sit around collecting dust.

I also have a pair of Sennheiser IE 60 earbuds that I use with my MP3 player.
At home, Bose Companion 2 speakers. They are only $99 and sound good even without a subwoofer. The Companion 1 does have a sub and costs $250, which is too pricey. Plus they have lasted a long time, so +++

At work, sound rarely matters, except for the occasional training module. I keep a pair of cheap headphones plugged in and lying on the desk just so I don't hear random chimes and beeps. I put them in my ears only for one of those rare training modules.

Nothing really special -
as a Headset a Logitech G533 - decent enough sound, good microphone and wireless with really good battery timings so ya perfect for my needs
For speakers i use an Auna Areal Bar 460 Soundbar - it aint hifi quality but it's okish enough and especially for normal volume and bass ranges it's totally fine
The monitor speakers when I feel like doing it desktop style or if I'm like on a sofa just the laptop speakers or sometimes I'll plug in whatever piece of crap I've dug out of a box in the garage or sumfin. Don't obsess over gaming sound especially if your into retro gaming.
Well before the flood wiped out all of my setups... I had my "beast" rig set up to a 5.1 set of speakers that was just pure awesome. My "second" rig (I self built two) I hooked up through the 40inch TV and ran it through the den's 5.1 surround sound system used when watching movies.

Now with just a laptop I have the ASUS Strix 7.1 headphones. To me they're not quite as "loud" or something as the Razor Megladoon (or something like that) I used to use, but boy they are spot on with direction. I can tell front back, left right with these headphones almost as good as with the actual speakers set up around the room. I like them. Well, except for the price. They are expensive. (Or seemed like it to me anyway)

Not using it, which is probably why I forgot about it. in 2001 I picked up the Klipsch 5.1 setup that all the reviews were loving at the time. The amp in the sub died so that mostly killed that system. Bought a 2.1 plate amp from Parts Express, modified the sub box a little bit, and installed it in there. Got a 2.1 speaker setup I could use, then, plus the leftover Klipsch speakers.

Now that I think about it, got a third receiver sitting around that could be used for a sound system in the lower level of the shop. Certainly have enough speakers laying around doing nothing.

Yeah, I have two bigger speakers in the basement unused because the amplifier I used with them died. I'd love to get them to active use, they had great sound. I tried to find some cheapo old amplifier but couldn't find a suitable one, and new amplifiers seem to have too much stuff I don't need nor want.

You said a mouthful there.
Razer headphones. Same for movies and TV unless the wife is also watching, which is super rare. I've just always been a headphone guy, never wanted to feel like I was subjecting others to my noise and wanted to feel immersed in the game/movie.
I can't use headphones because of the B&B but even if I didn't have that, I don't know if I want to be that removed from the real world. I have enough trouble with that as is. Also, I have this horrible fear of dying in a house fire because I was too immersed in a game, wearing headphones, to hear the smoke alarms go off.

Really depends on the set you get. Some really block sound while others let a lot through. I can listen to my wife yammer on about whatever <yawn> while playing a game with my cans on, no problem.
There's definitely a bit of risk that I won't hear something important downstairs or whatever, but I think the same risk would be there if I was playing speakers at satisfying volume. When I say immersed I don't necessarily mean I forget who I am for a while. ;)

X-D Oh, lordy lord. please tell me you dropped that in there as bait? X-D

Sennheiser HD598cs for headphones and a Teufel Concept E Magnum PE 5.1 connected to a decoderstation for standard speakers. Blue Yeti for microphone.

Now THAT is a very bad idea.

S/PDIF is a very old standard that can only transfer 2 uncompressed channels. So you will only get 5.1 on movies with compressed soundformats like DTS. For games (or movies that use newer soundformats like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master) you will be restricted to stereo only since they require a much higher bandwidth than S/PDIF can deliver.

If your receiver supports it I suggest you hook it up via HDMI.
