I'd day 1 pick up the first two subnautica games. Wouldn't hold my breath too much on the Subnautica 2 until it's complete. Seems like most devs don't like to keep GOG early access games up today. It's one of the few real complaints I have about GOG, and apparently that's not their fault.

The head developer, Charlie Cleveland, is oblivious or delusional about how piracy, DRM and basic economics works.

I really wanted Subnautica on GOG for my kids.

Charlie had his email on the Subnautica site so I emailed "will this becoming to GOG?", also explaining that Steams "Family sharing".... doesn't.

The reply was
"GOG isn't worth supporting for us because it's significantly more work for basically zero revenue. Sorry!"


Roll on a few years and Discord enter the Game distribution arena (remember that short live venture), anyway one of their big titles was Subnautica. No 3rd party DRM, the listing said. So Emailed Charlie to confirm. And hi confirmed it was DRM Free.. Woohoo

I bought it on Discord, it did require the client to work (DRM) and I got a refund

Roll on a few years, EPIC enters the fight
Subnautica is given away for free

So I get it, and even better it runs without Epic
After all these years a Legal DRM free version Subnautica... heavens rejoice

Twitter messaged Charlie, wanted it a public display,Thanking him for the final DRM free release.
His reply was something like "thanks, but I'm worried about the effects on piracy"

Note: it was given away for free, and has been readily available of torrent sites for the last 3 years, which Charlie knew because of a previous conversation with him.

A couple of weeks later
Epic add their own DRM component into their Client

A few days after that
Charlie adds it into the Epic Version of Subnautica


So nope, really sorry, I can't see it ever coming here.

Oh and that Event with Subnautica, DRM being added post purchase, pretty much killed any support I had for Epic as an alternative to Steam.

Bizarrely enough with the command-line flag encoded which still allows the game to be run without the client. I know, 'cause I was running the Epic installation on an offline and client-less machine for years (and keeping it updated in toe with the patch releases too).

Though it has been a while since I updated and played it, it was client-optional for about 3 years at least. PCGW still lists it as "DRM-free". https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Subnautica

If he's using piracy as a reason for not being on GOG he's either a clueless moron, or he's a damn liar. The game wasn't exactly cheap for years there and I'm certain some players were downloading the game (without much fiddling to get it to work) illegitimately. Ultimately the piracy he feared was already taking place without GOG being involved.

Yeah I grabbed it for free from Epic back in December 2018.

Basically the game was DRM-Free Lite.

Yet I've seen similar happen on Steam as well, so... *shrug*

For the past five years I have been sending Unknown Worlds an email once every year requesting that they release Subnautica on GOG. They have never replied to any of my emails. In this year's email I pointed out that there is no better time than now to do so because of the upcoming release of Subnautica 2. Releasing Subnautica on GOG would create hype for the upcoming sequel.

If GOG can take some advice Subnautica is one of those games which they should be aggressively lobbying the publisher to release on GOG. It's a single-player game, it's been a big commercial success and with the sequel coming now is the perfect time to release it on GOG.

I own both games from EPIC (bought them very cheaply), and at least the first one, as a 7z archive, works offline for me without any problems.

I would buy both games again here on GOG with the latest patches, but if the rights holder doesn't want additional revenue, then there's nothing you can do - except maybe keep asking and pestering me.

I actually don't understand this fear of piracy in this case at all. The first two games sold very well, eliminating any financial risk. So it makes sense to offer your titles as widely as possible. Piracy has always existed, and nothing has really helped against it, at most a delay. When will people finally understand this? Publishers, please finally focus on the honest gamers who are willing to pay for it and reward them with exemplary support (up-to-date patches, timely bug fixes) and DRM-free installers. That's the only way things work together harmoniously.
