Elmofongo: Can I ask what people thinks of The Last Temptation of Christ since I discovered it was directed by my now fav director Martin Scorsese?
avatar
Telika: Haven't seen it, but the cast is good, and it's an adaptation of Kazantzakis, who kinda rules (also wrote "Zorba the Greek", and "Captain Michalis / Liberty or Death"). So I wouldn't be surprised it to be a rather good film, even if I have little interest for that specific theme.
I watched it and well the acting just feels weird characters speaking in american accented english.

And I blame the fact that ever since I have seen Passion of the Christ where every character speak Aramaic Latin and Hebrew I cannot seem to take any other bible movie seriously with characters speaking in English it just feels to out of place. This applies to other stories because of setting like I prefer seeing Samurai Champloo in Japanese with English Subs because of setting.

Off topic can I ask why people accuse Passion of being Anti Semeitcal out of all Moives depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus? What clear examples does Passion have that others does not?

I recall other films that I saw when I was younger suggesting that the Romans were responsible for the crucifixion while Passion shows clearly that Jews forced the Romans into doing it (well, they demanded it and the Romans complied in order to avoid an uprising or at least tensions - but IIRC the film doesn't show that the Romans had any direct motivation of their own to "remove" Jesus).

tinyE: I for one can totally dig and respect that, my issue with the trailer, and yes it is only a trailer, is that the movie seems to be mud slinging onto itself. I have had many philosophy teachers, some more direct than others, and so far none of them...NONE OF THEM....ever started a class by telling everyone they have to admit 'God is dead' or fail. I am an atheist but if I had a teacher do that I'd probably immediately drop the class but only after kicking him the nuts. Does the movie give us an excuse to bash religion? ABSOLUTELY NOT, but you can understand how someone in my shoes might view the movie as an attack on my beliefs just as you view some of the comments in here as attacks on others'.
While I have not seen the movie, I didn't get the impression that it was claiming that this philosophy teacher was representative of other teachers, although the credits do list a number of cases of similar situations. Peter Boghossian, which again not representative, is another example that shows those sorts of teachers do exist. The purpose of the movie is essentially to open up religious discussions.

Elmofongo: Again just this sentence is enough to make me facepalm:

"Scienece supports (God's) exsitance, you know the truth!"

Its still not proven by science and the majority of scienetists are atheist and agnostic.
It's enough to make me facepalm too. Science neither supports nor denies the existence of God, although interpretations of science can have religious significance. For instance, if an interpretation of scientific data shows that the universe had a beginning, that could be used to show that the universe has a cause.

It's like a scorched battlefield, calm and quiet as it's considered cursed by the locals.
I actually came in here to ask the same question. Well, sounds good to me.

Since the topic seems to have turned to religious-themed movies, I'd like to direct people's attention to Jesus of Montreal, an interesting movie I saw in religion class once. Apart from being an excellent movie in and of itself, it also happens to contain one of the most brilliant scenes I have ever seen in any movie. A little background is needed in order to explain it. The movie is about a group of actors putting on a Passion Play. Some of the actors, in order to make some more money, have a side job of dubbing porn movies into French. In this magnificent scene, they are dubbing a porn scene with a foursome, but... one of the male actors hasn't shown up for the dubbing session. Hilarity ensues (probably NSFW): http://youtu.be/pu8ERvANVI4

So there is little place for female male-form fanciers amongst the faithful in your cult? Tut.

Meanwhile, just now was the Palm Sunday when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. I wish I knew whom he was, but also I think he was not an ordinary person. Plus for moral maxims what he said is a fair challenge, to my mind.

Or shall this be a god of exciting conversation, warm companionship and possibly sexy hands that can put together some furniture and such like? ;-)

But also, I think it would be fine to be not too flippant on the conviction of the OP. I think it is generally good to have some.
