iippo: what i mean, is that there are also several sort of salmiac (and naturally liquorice), which all look same black stuff like all salmiac - but taste very different. There is huge difference between how hard, soft, salty etc. I really like some salmiac's while others are not so good at all.

Noobs ofcourse cant tell difference ;)

FoxySage: I got what you meant. I'm however still used to just calling it liquorice in general. And pfft, it is easy to tell the difference between them. Such noobs indeed. :p

mqstout: I finally tried "Smarties" (the non-American version; think "giant M&M") that candy connoisseurs always say are better than M&Ms.

They're wrong.

Firstly, Nestle chocolate is inferior to Mars chocolate.
Secondly, there's too much chocolate vis à vis the candy.

HOWEVER, the color of Smarties are way better than M&M (and they're better-sourced dyes, too) and impart a slight (and very pleasant) flavor when eating them.

Perfection: Mars chocolate with M&M shape, size and proportion, but with Smarties' actual shell composition.

What are your favorite local candies I might try to source in the US?
M&Ms vs Smarties

I smelled someone talking about chocolate so I can't keep quiet about this. I happen to be one of those "connoisseurs who always say Smarties are better than M&Ms", in your eyes a snotty unwashed European sentiment. After not having eaten either of the two for quite a while, I bought a bag of M&Ms and a bag of Smarties yesterday so my opinion is well backed up with fresh impressions and let me say this:

M&Ms, especially the classic ones, have little to no taste other than peanut + sugar. It's just a cheap ass peanut covered with some sugar and a lousy excuse of a "chocolate" layer which is dry and falls off as soon as your teeth impact on it, revealing aforementioned cheap ass peanut inside immediately. According to the packaging (in my hands right now) it's supposed to be 24% peanuts and 48% milk chocolate, I seriously don't get how that's possible. Just look at those sorry things. One of the M&Ms in the bag was deformed, colorless and looked like a deformed tooth of Yeti after years of dieting on lichen.

The shape of Smarties is much sexier, more aerodynamic and how can you say there is "too much chocolate" inside Smarties?? Sacrilege!
I can't even compare the chocolate in M&Ms to the chocolate in Smarties because M&Ms have no taste while as Smarties have a creamy rich taste. Both are mass produced candy so neither of them is what I call really good, if you think any of this stuff is truly delicious than maybe you haven't tried hand made candy/confectionary/chocolate yet. Astronomic difference, but smarties are a 3 out of 5 while M&Ms are at best a 2 out of 5, imho only a 1 out of 5 when compared to much tastier mass produced candy such as Toffifee (Toffifay) or Maltesers which both get 5 out of 5 from me - on a rating scale that only includes mass produced stuff. Toffifee shows how to pull off mass produced candy with nuts inside and chocolate around, once you've tried those you have absolutely nil reason to go back to those pitiful crappy M&Ms unless you're reviewing them for ranting purposes.

In defense of M&Ms, they used to have more taste back when I was a kid in the 80s when they used coloring agents that are now forbidden due to health risks. Very aggressive stuff, but tasted ok, Now M&Ms taste like crap.

PS: red M&Ms are made with squished female lice, just in case you didn't know. (coloring agent E120, I just looked at the ingredients on the package I have here)

Hey now! No name calling of yourself, you snotty, unwashed European. (My eyes don't say that.)

That's peanut M&M, yellow package in the US. I'm not a fan of those. Too much crappy peanut. I'd take Smarties over them.

If I wanted chocolate, I'd eat chocolate. I eat M&Ms for the pleasant mix. The chocolate inside M&Ms is palatable to okay (but still "cheap candy chocolate"). The chocolate inside the Smarties is horrible gross nastiness that Nestle calls "chocolate" somehow.

Of course! We agree there. Something had to be the seed to get the thread going :)

I'm aware. I did say I preferred the composition of the candy part on the Smarties.
