I finally tried "Smarties" (the non-American version; think "giant M&M") that candy connoisseurs always say are better than M&Ms.

They're wrong.

Firstly, Nestle chocolate is inferior to Mars chocolate.
Secondly, there's too much chocolate vis à vis the candy.

HOWEVER, the color of Smarties are way better than M&M (and they're better-sourced dyes, too) and impart a slight (and very pleasant) flavor when eating them.

Perfection: Mars chocolate with M&M shape, size and proportion, but with Smarties' actual shell composition.

What are your favorite local candies I might try to source in the US?
Favourite candy? Habanero peppers coated in dark chocolate. Hmmm! And the look of others, who don't know what is beneath the chocolate, when they eat one of those is priceless! :-D
On other news, Belgian beer is better than German beer, and whoever disagrees with that statement is wrong.

Swiss chocolate does have my seal of approval, however; that stuff is pretty good.

Those sound awesome, where do I find them?

Fact. Just as German wine is better than French/Italian wine.

Personal opinion: any beer is better than any wine though.

Lindt makes a Chili Chocolate bar which I enjoy. Not particularly spicy, but a nice warm bite to it. I'm intrigued with the habanero chocolate.

*Oh, and speaking of chocolate, every Christmas for the past three years, my wife has put a chocolate stout in my stocking. Can't recall who brews it right now, but it's very tasty.

It's not Habanero, but they make two of the best pepper chocolates I've had.
Godiva pecan caramel truffles
Chocolate-covered coffee beans. Sweet, accompanied by the bitter bite of the bean.
Personally I don't like the shells of M&Ms so I prefer smarties.

Actually, Mars make confection, not chocolate.

As above.

No idea why I read that as a chocolate trout. Maybe it's because you used to have a fish for your avatar? Whatever happened to that, anyway? I liked the bright blue color!

Both Mars and Nestle chocolate is inferior to Cadburys chocolate. As far as I remember you don't get Cadburys in America, but you might be able to import it somewhere...

Of course, if it costs as much as American candy does here you'll pay an arm and a leg for it..

Chocolate trout! I love it!

Had to change the avatar after seeing Guardians of the Galaxy. I love Groot.
