Is anyone else surprised by the lack of children and animals in this game? That's a big difference from the original; rats were everywhere!

Yeah. now that I think of it, it's kinda odd. Animals and children really gave some feel of realism to original Deus Ex.
Children and animals in general seem to be rare, and a touchy subject, in video games nowadays. Still, both new Fallouts had them without any issues. Go figure.

They had issues!
I fired several Fatmans at those kids and they didn't have a scratch on them!
But seriously, I had noticed the lack of animals and really a general lack of variety of NPCs in general in DXHR. It's probably to avoid controversy, people are way too touchy these days.

Exactly,

The companies are obviously very afraid of being accused of depicting child murder. Especially in games like FO 3, NV and DX:HR, where players have a lot of freedom.

Hell, Bioware showed some serious balls in giving the player the opportunity to kill Connor in DA:O.

JHGT: Both have their issues and stupidities but that doesn't ruin the overall awesomeness of the games.
It doesn't, but I really wish I could do a triple take down on the guy who thought the take downs were a good idea.

I know this thread is old but meh.

Im trying to take myself away from EvE and figured id restart DE:HR. I have only the base game on steam. are the 2 small packs and the missing link DLC worth getting?

The Missing Link is a very solid piece of DLC that IMO captures the play style of Deus Ex even better than the main game (i.e. no boss fights in arenas you cannot escape from!). It gave me about 7 hours of gameplay, and I was satisfied with it.

The other two pieces are ... ok, I'd say. Nothing spectacular. One adds a few guns that get dropped in your inventory on your first mission. The bonus mission is a bit better, since it establishes another connection to the first game. Besides, I couldn't imagine playing the game without that mission. It would make some things...awkward.

thank you, sounds like a sound vote in favour

Another vote in favour of the Missing Link from me. It's basically more of the same with a much better finale, and there's a pretty interesting achievement for playing through it without using a single weapon or praxis kit, which is a fun (and occasionally very tense) way to play. It's definitely one of the better examples of DLC out there.

Yeah, Missing Link is very good.

I will even say the small packs are good. The remote charges and shotgun really enhance an action playthrough and the silent sniper rifle is very fun for stealth playthroughs (though a little overpowered). The mission is pointless though, sadly.

If you get the weapon packs I would suggest dropping the items when you start a new game and not using them until you get them in-world, for balance reasons. They can be found and bought like anything else, and it works better to get them that way.
thanks all, bought the 3 dlc, 2gb so likely tomorrow before I can play it now.
+1 vote for The Missing Link, excellent DLC

I wouldn't get the Tactical Enhancement Pack though - it adds 10000 credits to you and I feel it upsets the balance in early in the game, makes it easier than in should be. If you get it though, I'd second StingingVelvet's advice of dropping the new weapons you get and getting them the "normal" way.
i havnt played the missing link, but i liked the game. Its shame there wasnt another city hub or two, because the last section of the game was fairly boring dungeon crawling. The city hub sections were great though.
I need to replay it again, I really enjoyed the game. Only thing I disliked was the battle with Namir. The others were easy if you were able to get close and use a stun gun on them as you could rinse and repeat the process till they died. But not Namir, The stun gun strategy just wouldn't work on him and was extremely hard to see on screen on the xbox 360 version if you took the new chip. Might of been easier if I hadn't.
