I picked up City of Remnants a few weeks ago and have gotten two games under my belt. My initial impression is that it seems quite fun and well-designed. It's basically a marriage of deckbuilding and tactical area-control, but they work together much more smoothly than you might expect. I think the reason for this is that killed gang members are permanently removed from your deck, meaning that you can't just build a hyper-efficient deck engine while ignoring the tactical play.

I lost horribly in the second game due to getting randomly jumped by police raids in the first two rounds, which I never really recovered from. But while this was unlucky, I didn't feel like it was unfair - I gambled on capturing some of the more valuable sites early on (which are also more likely to get raided by cops), and the gamble blew up in my face. Fair enough.

JinseiNGC224: Never played Blood Bowl though, but I want to.

keeveek: More involving wargame? How about Memoir 44? It's about WW2 , allies vs germans, multiple scenarios, hex map, nice plastic units, deep but not overwhelming tactics
That does look like it's right up my alley, but I'll have to wait till I have some more spare change. Looks like it has tons of expansions too, could probably play all of WWII on that game.

Crassmaster: Check out a game called Kemet. It's not really a big time wargame, but it is a terrific game with unique power-ups set in Ancient Egypt.
That game also looks really cool, I was just about to ask about a game in an ancient setting too. Psychic much?

I ended up getting Munchkin because it was a bit cheaper than King of Tokyo and it looked like a little more fun based on the Wil Wheaton videos I watched. After this I think Memoir '44 or Kemet are going to be next on my list.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys!

Bwahaha! I always know what you're thinking...
I have a lot of board games but lack the people to play it with. =P
Though they will get dusted off each year on my birthday. :)
Unfortunately the board games I liked to play no one else did because they were too long. Risk and Axis and Allies

I also played the other popular board games: Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess, Checkers, etc.
Gah, I wish Death Angel would arrive already. I wanted an actual Space Hulk board game but anyone who has priced those lately will know why I went with the card game option.

I played Munchkin with 3 players. Fun, but it feels like a game that hits its stride with more players at the table, like a lot of board games it seems. Probably going to get Memoir '44 for sure at this point since it's primarily for two players.

I also hit the thrift store looking for a decent quality chess set. Didn't find one, but I did find a Milton-Bradley game from the '60s called "Dogfight", it's missing two red planes but looks intact otherwise. Not bad for three bucks, hope to try it out soon. Also grabbed Cranium, Mad Gab and a dominoes set, haven't played the first two, but they were all under four bucks so no big loss if they're less than engaging.

edit: has anyone played Fluxx? I've been thinking about getting a deck. Do the themes differentiate themselves more than Munchkin? With Munchkin it all appears to be the same game with different names for the actions/classes/etc. (not that that's a bad thing) and I was wondering if, for example, Cthulhu Fluxx was pretty much the same as vanilla Fluxx or if it'd be worth it to get both.

Not all games, but Munchkin is definitely one of them. Since someone may help you with your fight, the funniest part starts when there is more than 1 person who can stop you :P

With 4 people Munchkin rocks.
Anyone looking for a relatively simple board game for up to 8 players that doesn't take years to play : Go and buy a copy of Wilderness.

The rules are easy. And the cards that players get can be used as either a positive for them...or a negative against other players. Makes for some neat little choices. Lots of fun.

I've got regular Fluxx and Zombie Fluxx. They're pretty much the same thing. Zombie Fluxx has zombie cards in it that will stay with you like Keepers, but they're bad, and you need certain weapon Keepers to kill them. If there are too many zombies out at once the zombies win and the players lose. At least that's how I remember it. Haven't played Zombie version in a year probably.

The game play is very similar with one or two new card types or interaction types. If you REALLY like Fluxx, then having a different version is nice because you can mash them together. I don't think having multiple versions really adds any value myself, unless the theme of one particularly grabs you.

Thanks. I'll probably just get the vanilla version, if anything, and save the money for Memoir.
