Im still hoping that GoG will come out with an updated version that allows me to buy a copy of Earthsiege / Earthsiege 2 that will work on Vista or Windows 7. I miss those games so mucch its almost sad. There are no good mech games anymore, those that exist are a part of a FPS or are RTS strong.
We have a mech game here but I've never played it.

Check it out.

The only mech games I've played are Mechwarrior 4, which I loved, and Armored Core 4 for the 360 which I only tried briefly. It was an alright play.

Already played it, wasnt all that impressed with it. I liked the Earthsiege Series cause it was very tactical before you begin the mission and after you were in the mission. That and I really just loved ES2 for getting in the Razor and disabling stuff from the sky.
Shattered Steel is another mech game on GOG, but that's about it.

The problem is that most mech IPs have since been acquired by other companies that may not hold the rights to the games themselves. When the game and its IP are divided like this it can make re-releasing them all but impossible (e.g. MechWarrior 2--Activision made the game but Microsoft currently holds the IP).

I was under the impression the FASA license had gone to some other company now? With Battletech, Shadowrun and Earthdawn all under the FASA banner you would think games companies would be fighting for that name.

Last I heard, in 2010 the Battletech stuff (including Mechwarrior) is still in the hands of the original inventor of the franchise. I don't know, I'd actually have to dig up who it was that got sued for using the Robotech/Macross mech ripoffs that got this last game delayed (or save us from this future, cancelled)
Heavy Gear!!
I would like another good mech sim. They are one of the few sims I like. Metal Fatigue was mentioned earlier, a great RTS.
Ah, I remember the good old days of MechWarrior 3... racing Firefly mechs on the MSN gaming zone.

Seriously, remove everything, just put a jumpjet, booster and a whole lot of heatsinks. Load up the monorail level and race the length of the track against other mechs. Stacks of fun in multiplayer!!!

For a bit of fun, add a single laser to each mech. Chaos ensues.

Microsoft still holds the FASA Interactive rights but has licensed MechWarrior, Shadowrun, and Crimson Skies to Smith & Tinker (founded by FASA founder Jordan Weisman) who are working on that new MechWarrior game.

How does this legal crap work? I mean, let's say I bought a license from FASA and I made Mechwarrior 2, and afterwards I lose the rights and MS buys the license so they can make Mechwarrior 3. Do they magically acquire the rights to the prior games as well?
And if it is so, how come the Mech Commander games are free?

I loved the Earthsiege series. I'm torn between ESII and Starsiege as my favorite from the series, and Missinforce: Cyberstorm is one of the only squad-based strategy sims that I've played through more than a dozen times.

The original developer/publisher retains the rights to the game itself but not the licensed content (in this case being mech designs and so forth). Games are sometimes re-released with a renewed license or the affected content replaced, but most of the time they are simply never seen again. TOCA 3 and Colin McRae 2004 were removed from GOG for this reason.

Contrary to popular belief the MechCommander games are not freeware. Microsoft released the source and assets of MechCommander 2 to promote XNA development, which may be where the confusion originated, but its original CD form is not freeware nor is any version of the first game.
look up mission force: cyberstorm. its not on gog yet but with enough votes http://www.gog.com/EN/WANTED we can get it here.
