Dr.M. has stolen our marketing plans, taken our game masters, absconded with our video trailers, and pilfered our contracts! Coala suggests that we should track down the evil Dr., but how in the world can we do that? We know that he has our "Get HUGE" formula, and we suspect that Dr. M. is going to the headquarters of our next publisher--and we know it's one of the five we've already mentioned in our CDP Days Conference this Spring. One of our clever developer guys pointed out that the only way that Dr. M. could have found GOG's secret headquarters (as opposed to our regular, non-secret one) would be to have put a tracking device somewhere. We've tracked Dr. M's tracker (ha! Take that, evil!) and we're plotting his location on a world map with each of our possible upcoming publishers' locations in them. Keep tuned for more updates as we triangulate on the signal and try to track down...the DASTARDLY DR. M.!

the mysterious Dr. M. made his appearance was way back in September, when we re-launched and moved the service out from the beta. Now, with the big announcement quickly approaching, it seems that Dr. M. has come out of the shadow once again. What's he up to this time? Find out more in the tale of great horror, entitled "Dr. M. & The Dastardly Doom". What horrors await? What grim future is coming to GOG.com?

We'll be posting the next pages of the comic in the next days so stay tuned to this news post as the story will reveal more info on Dr. M. and the secret briefcase!

WhiteElk: EA published SMAC and I'm fairly sure they still have the rights.
It was published in 1999, it's possible that the rights retained to the developers after 10 years. But I'm just guessing.

SLP2000: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is 2K games (they own Firaxis Games)

Im not sure who owns the rights but the Alpha Centaur complete re-release edition on the Sold Out label, that i bought a year or so ago has the EA logo on the case..if that means anything..

MichaelPalin: Steam still has like 15-20 times more users than gog and they sell old games there too. I wouldn't be so sure that gog would be more profitable than Steam for old games, although maybe I'm just pushing my hate for EA too far.
I'm sure their user base is much bigger, I'd guess it's bigger than 20 times, but how many of those guys buy old game?

I'd say GOG has more users who buy old games (well, all of them do).

We could still get 2k at the end of summer. (EA too, if today isn't EA's day.) Either way, I think they'll get it eventually. Hopefully soon.

And I'd wager that the majority of people on GOG are also on Steam. So it's unlikely for GOG to have more people who purchase old games, since they share.

SLP2000: On GOG everyone is a target customer, and the user base is pretty big.

Think of it like this. Steam has a wider, broader audience, whereas GoG has massed up a lot of Old School Video-Games aficionado. In a month Steam sells old games, quantity wise (that is if they are not on sale or whatnot), comparable to what GoG sells in a week or so. It would be wiser for a company to publish their old games on GoG than Steam for that sole reason.

Yes Steam has way more users, but predominantly these users want new games. Plus, from a business standpoint, you might be unable to calculate the sales numbers for an old game on a service like Steam (which has various demographics/markets), versus a specialized service (like GOG) which is catered for the back catalog of games that you have.

Plus, Steam absolutely does nothing to patch or ensure the games work on modern O/S. They are simply a distribution service. GOG on the other hand offers services that ensure compatibility for old games, while also providing the customer support.

It makes much more sense for old games to be on GOG from a business standpoint.

Plus there is a vocal segment of Steam's userbase who won't buy old games on Steam due to some of the horrible experiences where the old games they bought on Steam were horribly coded for modern systems and did not work.
GoG is catering to an older crowd, those of us that love and miss classic titles. Steam just spam out populair titles and hope they sell well. (A rough comparison, I know)

Many of the games I have gotten here through GoG have been games I cant find anywhere legit these days, and also, if I happend to find my old CD's / disks I am not sure I could get the games to run.

So heres to hopeing it will be both ARTS, either way, my bank might be very upset with me :)

I refuse to install Steam, and I know there are many people here who also refuse to do it.

Plus, most of guys who have Steam and GOG prefer to buy here.
GOG has new customers from the Steam forums .
Yeah I think it's going to be Lucas Arts taking in consideration the photos on Facebook and what Google Maps is illustrating. xD

Probably just a minority. There are people on every internet forum who are vocally against Steam. I don't forsee this group being so distinct in that regard. Yet its popularity remains intact.

That'd be a important point if something were to be released on both platforms. I mean, I'm with you on that, but my copy of LOOM is on Steam for an obvious reason.

x2!!!

At this time, GOG is the ONLY digital distribution I will use. I once used Impulse, but they sold us out to gamestoppers. So GOG is the one and only place for me to get games online. I passed on Civ5 (my favorite game franchise of all time) simply because it required steam.
